Helms is the publisher of the GM service manual. Did you get a 2 book set, one for mechanical issues and one for electrical. It is my understanding that some of the earlier manuals had a white cover, but all the GM service manuals I've seen had a red cover.
Haynes and chilton are nice for pictures, but horrible on in-depth troubleshooting.

That is absolutely correct. The earlier copies had white covers.
And yes, the earlier the edition, the more useless it is. But it redeams itself in one area - troubleshooting flowcharts. Kicks ***.
You have a code, it has a procedure for testing it.
The Helm's Service Manual is a necessity for even the average Corvette owner. It gives you checklist procedures to do just about anything. Sure it won't tell you how to remove a bolt or how an electrical plug works, that's what is nice about this forum, someone has done it before you and will help you through it. You'll see a lot of "ask me how I know" comments so you won't make the same mistakes. I bought my Helms as soon as I bought my 92 4 years ago and it looks like it has been through hell and back, but I treat it like the holy grail.
I have the 2 piece GM set and am less than thrilled. They all have stong/weak points and whoever said they have them all is on the right track. I will pick up the Helms the next time I am in te store and think about it.
I have "worn the covers" off my 89 GM Helms manual with use. I purchased it directly from Helms at www.helm.com on line. While the Helms GM is not cheap, your first repair will more than pay back the original purchase price. The other brand manuals went into the s--t can....where they belong!
