I'm trying to rig the AIR pump on my 91 ZR-1 so that it runs all the time instead of shutting off once the car warms up. The purpose of this is to help with emissions. I had spliced it directly into the big red 25 amp wire but after shutting the car off I realized that the red wire is always hot - even with the key off. This would be fine except that the emissions testers always shut the car down after testing. I've got a feeling the pump noise would raise a few eyebrows when they shut the car off. So anyhow what I need is a way to shut off the pump when the key is turned off. What is the easiest way to do this? I need something simple cause I suck at electrical!

If I was you I would put in a relay and hook it to a ignition wire. So when the key is on it energizes the relay that runs the hot lead to the pump. If you need I could make a simple diagram of what you need and send it to ya.

I'm looking at the schematics for a 90 ZR1 so the color code of the wires may be different on a 91.

To turn the Air pump on, the ECM grounds pin 5 black/pink wire on the (Green connector of the ECM).

The black/pink wire goes to pin F on the Electric Air Pump Relay. The relay energizes and the pump turns on.

The ECM also grounds (Brown ECM connector) pin 5,
a brown wire.

The brown wire goes to the (EDV) Divert Valve Solenoid which energizes the solenoid and diverts the air from the pump to the exhaust manifolds.

All you need to do is find the two wires at the ECM Green connector pin 5 and the Brown Connector pin 5 and splice into them and ground both wires.

This will turn on the pump and diverter valve when the ignition is in run or start.

You could also install a toggle switch so that when the switch is closed the wires are grounded for manual operation of the pump and diverter valve solenoid and when the switch is open you have normal ECM operation.

The 90 diagram sounds identical to what I'm looking at. I like the idea of grounding the wires at the ecm and using the existing relay, seems like the easiest approach. Thanks a lot guys.
