Default Help from those familiar with 4+3 shifter

Ok were talkin about an 86 4+3 car. I can't get the shifter over to reverse. The release ring felt loose. I take off the overdrive button and remove the T shaped thing that turns on the overdrive. Haynes says to twist off shifter, Now unless someone makes me mad and I turn green, that shift **** ain't comin off. Now my real problem. The release ring is not connected to anything, and there is nothing hanging loose. What is this ring supposed to be attached to? I can find nothing that would be any kind of release. Please dumb down the response as I am pretty mechanically inclined, but do not know what the factory calls every doo hickey. Thanks

Sorry about the probs. with the reverse ring. I had the same thing with my '86 also. Never figured out the problem. I ended up just replacing the whole shifter that I managed to find on e-bay for $75.00 It ended up being a 2 hr. job that is pretty straightforward. Sorry I can't diagnose it for ya.

if i remember my '87 correctly, you need to pry out the square metal insert sticking up, then you'll be able to easily un-screw the shifter handle. if that reverse ring feels loose, it sounds like the reverse lock out cable came loose somewhere, probably detached from the shifter.

it runs from a connection on the shifter, snakes underneath the console, and runs up somewhere to the steering column (i think - i've never seen that end of it).

If you remove the center console cover you can unscrew the shifter boot from the plate and you should have enough room to look everything over to find out where it is disconnected at.
