convertible - remove the rear license plate and reach in.
coupe - open the rear hatch, there are two screws (torx?) that will remove the brake light housing. There are four small bulbs inside.

On my 88 all 4 were out or were out when I got the car. and they are not cheap. I think about 7-8.00 per. you need 4. I only put 2 in for now.
You will need to remove the 2 hex bolts from inside the hatch, then pry up the light from outside (it might be hard being it's been a few years since the last time it was off) then I think thier is 2 screws, not sure. then just pull out and replace all 4. DO NOT TOUCH THEM WITH YOUR FINGERS. use gloves or what ever.

If replacing the bulbs does not work, you'll either have to change the switch at the brake pedal, or replace the connector thats inside the B-pillar.
