I am getting a code 21 - left front time out - on my '92 with Selective ride control (andZ07). I notice that when I turn the valve gear on the top of the shock there is a slight kink, or hard spot, mid way thru the turn in each direction. This is probably the cause of my problem. Is there any way, short of shock replacement (which would mean both front shocks since I was always told to replace shocks in pairs) to remove that kink?? Also, is there a good place to get replacements, or only thru GM parts?
Bilstein can rebuild the FX3 shocks. Call them at 1-800-537-1085 and ask for Bill or Jack in the tech dept. They are in Poway, CA near San Diego.
Replacement FX3 shocks are available for around $200 each in the accessory catalogs like Mid-America or Ecklers. The cost to rebuild a shock depends in part on what needs to be done. Bilstein should be able to give you an estimate based on the description of the problem.
When I had one of my shocks rebuilt, Bilstein told me that it was not really necessary to rebuid/replace the FX3 shocks in pairs. They are gas charged and should wear like the older hydraulic (oil charged) shocks.

Thanks. Did you also check availability thru GM parts?
GM should have the shocks but I would think that they would run about twice what the catalogs ould sell them for. BTW, if an actuator goes bad, expect to pay around $250 PER!
I talked to Jack French at Bilstein last night and for the "weekend autocross" valving it is $100 - $145 per shock depending on the condition of the shock. The src module with chip is $230 from them. Also, Bilstein supplies Ferrari with similar shocks (FX3) and Ferrari put Bilstein in touch with the manufacturer of Ferrari actuators. So now that company supplies Bilstein with actuators for Corvette. You can get new actuators from Bilstein for $298 each. I've seen them for $220 each on the internet.
Make sure the plastic gear in the actuator is not damaged also. Sometimes they break if the shock gear sticks. The shocks and actuators are availsble cheap at Shox.com They run about $165 each brand new. They also have new actuators but e-bay has new actutors for about $250. May want to try using wd40 or contact cleaner on gear of shock to make sure there is no gunk in there causing the bind. Good luck Rich
