in a previous "POOR IDLE" thread, member '6speedshifty' said that if he disconnected his IAC while the car was running, the idle would run up to about 2000RPM, and then return to normal when plugged back in. Is this a valid method to determine if IAC is functionaing? On my '95, when I discconnect IAC, there is absolutely no change in idle? BTW, my idle drops from 700RPM to around 400RPM after about 30 minutes of driving. (LT1, 66K miles, 100% stock except for TB bypass)
any thoughts?

I have unsuccessfully been trying to solve an intermittent stumbling idle problem since last year. It is a 95 LT-1 automatic with about 55000 miles. When coming to a stop with car in gear, the engine would sometimes stumble almost like it was going to die (digital display would also dim as idle dropped). At normal driving speeds the car is excellent.
I first tried spraying some cleaner into throttle body and that seemed to eliminate the problem but then it came back. I then removed the IAC and cleaned the pintel but that didn't seem to help. So I replaced the IAC and that also did not seem to help. There are times when the stumbling idle does not happen at all and I think it's gone, but then it comes back again. The intermittent nature of this is really frustrating and there does not seem to be a pattern for when this will happen. Nobody on this forum had any real insights as to what causes this but there have been plenty of folks with similar problems. If you solve yours, let us know.

Doug, did u check out your EGR valve? If the valve is gunked up with carbon, it may not be shutting all the way when car is idleing(no exhaust should be allowed to enter intake during idle). If there is a problem with the EGR, the engine will not idle well with noxious exhaust being fed back into the intake. I am going to put a small piece of flat aluminum beer can remnent(finely cut to perfection of course) to block off the exhaust pipe which is attached at the rear of the intake manifold on passenger side. Maybe, just maybe, our EGR's are acting up only when the engine's have reached full operating temperature, but act OK for the first 20 or 30 minutes of driveing....???? BTW, WTF do I know!!!!

The IAC is just a stepper motor. The ECM marches it in to lower idle speed and marches it out to raise idle speed. When you disconect it, it'll just stay where it was when disconected.

I did not check this myself but next time I have it in for any servicing I'll ask them to check the EGR.
