I have a 79 camaro and just had a full engine rebuild. But for some reason when I go to put in reverse or drive, the car stalls out-unless I hold the gas pedal in a bit. Anybody have any ideas to what could be the problem? The car has sat awhile and not run that often--I figured it was just a simple problem...Would like to get someones opinion. The car is actually my aunts car and I'm going over to pick it up and bring it to my place, hopefully its not a major thing I couldn't fix while I'm over there to pick it up....please help me...thanx

When in park what is it idling at? it may be to low. Should be about 900 rpm and settle at about 6 when in gear. Non- ECM car right?

I had that problem with my old RoadRunner. I put to big of a cam in for the stock stall. But most likely the rpms are just set to low.

Is it something easy I could do myself--by adjusting the rps, rather than taking it to a shop? thanks--oh, I don't know what the rpms are running at, but I will know tomorrow when I go pick it up a couple hours away. So basically I guess I have to keep my foot on the gas a bit when I come to stop lights....

Could be any number of things. Those things listed above are all good tips. My old 78 TA did the same thing... turned out to be vaccum lines, but my neighbors 69 Camaro has a 550hp 350SBC that did that because of a poorly tuned carb.
