That is an interesting comment, because no one has addressed #2.

#1.) Good advice, so far. You can use generic heater hose for long, straight runs. Most heater hose seems to be 5/8ths". A typical heater uses 5/8th" and 3/4". Hose is measured by the I.D. so you can measure the fitting, O.D. it came off of for an accurate size.

#2.) A good, medium pressure oil hose works for trans coolers. MOST pros will use that. When *I* connect a hose to metal tubing, I like to start a double flair in the tubing to raise a ridge on the tubing. With the hose clamp beyond the ridge, it will never come off. Stainless steel braided hose with the proper fittings make for a "bullet proof" installation.

#3.) An air ratchet is NOT an impact tool. Standard sockets are fine.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I know that they were elementary questions, but I'd rather ask and look stupid than simply do and be poor(er).

question - so does the hose size signify the size of the fitting it goes around or the hose's ID prior to installation? i would expect the pre-install ID would be an 1/8 or so smaller than after installation...

Pretty much, both. Measure the fitting behind the barb or raised part on the end that keeps the hose and/or clamp from sliding off.
