Default 6 spd. Shifter lubrication

My '94 LT1 6 speed shifter is getting a little clunky and I can feel the shift gates fairly well as I go through the gear pattern; I've had this in other cars in the past and I think the shifter needs lubrication, especially at the gate areas. The manual says to use motor oil (any other suggestions/better product?). What is the best way to lubricate the whole mechanism? From the top? Bottom? Remove anything for access?
Thanks for any advise.

when was the last time the gear oil in the tranny was changed?

I highly recommend Castrol TWS 10-60, available from your friendly local BMW dealer.

If you feel the need to lube the shifter itself, you will have to remove the ****, console and rubber boot. Then squirt some oil on the linkage.

I dont think that is the linkage. Check your tranny fluid and replace with the BMW Castrol 10w-60. Your ZF will thank you.

Default shifter lubrication

Bogus had given me a suggestion about the BMW synthetic a little while ago when I posted about using synthetics and I intend to put it in the trans, just haven't got to it yet. Trans. has 97,000 miles. I guess its time now to hunt down a BMW dealer and get it done and lube the shifter too. Thanks for the info about going through the top to lube it and thanks again to bogus.

I still use good ole GM synthetic tranny lub as the manual calls for. I change it every other oil change, but I'm into overkill. As far as the shifter unit, when I installed the Hurst, I used the white lithium grease. The bottom line is that my tranny is still smooth as silk.

I remember a hole in the bottom of the shifter boot, you amy be able to shoot some lube in through that hole, maybe.

Change the oil - NOW!!!! It should be done every 30k.

Don't even bother with lubing the shifter, it ain't the problem. That old oil is.

You are most welcome, anytime!
