Default 84 horn dilemma

I have an 84, manual, that's been sittin for, oh about 10 years or so. Barely been driven, has less than 42000 miles.

BUT .. as with all others mine's got problems.

Horn doesn't work, unless I bypass the entire electrical system and ghetto rig it to the battery.
Also, only one side actually sounds off.
Checked all wiring, fuses, etc. that I can possibly get my hands on.
I'm thinking it's in the steering column?
Behind the horn button, physically touching the horn wire (yellow) to the metal plates. Nothing.
Not even clicking.
Replaced the horn relay. Still nothing.

Help!

ya, the contacts in the wheel are pretty cheesy.
are you sure the pigtail that goes into the wheel
is good? If you know how to use a ohm/voltmeter,
you might be able to narrow it down a a bit by
probing around and seeing where the connection
gets broken. I had the same problem, but it was
the relay that was the problem... good luck HTH

ok, i'm not so sure that the pigtail is good. i think it's missing the little connector thing (not sure what real people call it, lol) on the other side.

past the spring and all.
it came out just by barely tugging on it, and now it won't go back in all the way.

Might be your problem, should be spring loaded so that it
keeps contact on the surface when installed. It locks into
place so check to make sure its making contact. Dont forget
the actual spring for the telescoping wheel could be a weak
spot too...

There is a fuse behind the DIC, right next to the relay, if you have not checked it yet. Guy

From the 15 amp fuse is a pink/white wire that leads to the horn relay. From the horn relay are two black wires, one to the theft deterrent system the other to the horn switch. Also two green wires that lead to the horns. I would check the wires for continuity. I would then feed 12 volts from the battery right to the green wires and see if the horns work. If they do you now know the connections are good from the relay to horn. I think your problem is in the contact wire. The horn should sound when you touch the wire to ground. I have a very good schematic if you need it. Let us know how you make out.

take both horns out, and bench test them. 1 is likely dead.
I have a horn for that car if you need.
email me if you need............

if it doesn't click, doesn't that mean the relay is shot?
