I bought an 86 that already had a bigger cam, ported heads, reworked base manifold, bigger tube runners, ported plentum, roller rockers, 52mm throttle body and headers. It did have a hotter coil in it and high performance control module, but they failed on my drive home from California and the shop that worked on it only had stock replacement pieces. I did not notice much difference with the stock pieces, but want to ensure I am getting all I can out of the motor.
Given these mods, what ignition set up should I be running?
I see that Corvette Central offers a Hypertech Power coil and an HEI control module. Are they worth their salt? Would I be in line for an MSD?
I don't know the cam specs, but it does have a nice lope to it.
I noticed no difference from aftermarket ignition pieces as compared to stock, especially the module. I did leave the MSD coil in. Goos wires always seem to be worth it.
I meant good wires. The goos wires are temperamental suckers
For a NA application I prefer the HyperTech setup for simplicity, unity and reliability. Also it fires well to 6k RPM or more, whereas our stock HEI tends to fall off by 5k RPM.
Indeed a set of performance wires along with cut-back stock style AD Delco plugs gapped to say .045" will also help performance by assuring an efficient burn.
I run the TPIS performance wires for an improved stock size wire but MSD SuperConductor wires are hard to beat and others like Taylor make fine wires sets too.
