I went with the Castrol.
I bet you wouldnt feel any diffrence between the two. I'm sure the RP is good stuff too. Just the fact that its new fill is what helps. My tranny got a little quieter and the shifts felt a little smoother in throw.

Yesterday, I spoke to Shafi Keisler from Keisler Engineering regarding a new transmission and the use of Royal Purple Synchromax in the transmission. He advised against it. He said something about the internals didn't mix well with the Royal Purple.
since starting this thread ive also heard of problems with Royal purple in Getrag gearboxes ref phospher bronze componants swelling up !!!!
Soooooo I think I am going to go with the Castrol it seams a safer bet, again thanks for your thoughts
Ive just got to get the rest of my engine built and back in , just thinking ahead while wating for some parts to arrive from Mearl Its a long way from Arazona to England!!

Again, Getrag is different than ZF.
However, going with the Castrol is a safe bet - one you will not regret!!!
If this means anything to you, it's the only oil I will use in my ZF6.
Hope you have better luck than I in removing plugs
I too was going to change the fluid in my six-speed transmission in my 1990 Corvette. I put the car up on ramps twice and both times failed to get the fill plug out. I used a 17 mm Allen wrench and a 17 mm hex socket on a breaker bar. I used a floor jack to put torque on the plug and I could see that all of this effort was doing nothing more than slowly destroying the plug. At the outset, I used a penetrating lubricant. I'll have to take it to a local Corvette shop. I've already got the new plugs for the shop to use to replace the old ones. -- Eric
stuck level plug in a ZF box , hmmmmmm that will be a " german thing " they didnt win the war, but they have been getting back at us ever since...... who said they didnt have a sence of humor good luck on getting your plug out ,
hopefully mine wont be a pain in the a$$ , now I ve said that it probably will , my g/box is on the floor at the mo surrounded with a pile of vette intestine

hit is with some PB blaster, and try it again.
You really need some height to get some torque on it.
As was said above, GM or Castrol will be fine. I change my tranny oil every other time I change the engine oil. I know over kill, and I use the GM synthetic oil, just because it's easier for me to get.
i just stopped by my local BMW dealer yesterday and picked up 3 quarts of liquid life for my zf6.. kinda pricey stuff!! glad i don't need to but it all the time..lol

I put the Castrol/BMW oil in my ZF, too, but something bothers me:
The Castrol is engine oil. Engine lubricant and gearbox lubricants live in completely different environments, deal with very differents loads, temperatures, and contaminents. Yet, in this case they are interchangable?
I wouldn't put gear lube in my engine, how does the zfDoc figure engine oil is best for my gearbox????
Somebody tell me where my thinking is messed up....please!
Otherwise I'm gonna' feel compelled to change back to the recommended GM fill.
