Any suggestions on brand for a '94 LT1 before I go my standard Sears DieHard? Read in Consumers Reports that Sears rated about mid range while Advance Auto brand rated high. I drive between Albuquerque, NM, Flagstaff, AZ and sometimes Phoenix. I get a wide range of temps from sub zero to 100 +. I need a good all-weather with strong cold start amps.
I would think that the Advance battery is made by somebody else and labeled for Advance.
I have ued the Sears DieHard Gold batteries and they work fine. For whatever reason, Sears no longer rates their batteries in CCA. They have a "North" and a "South" based on your climate. I seem to recall that the earlier DieHard Golds were areound 850-900 CCA.
The Interstate Meg-A-Tron is rated at 700CCA The Optima batteries are good too but you have to be careful with the top posts interfering with the driver's side firewall brace. Some folks just cut the positive post down so there is sufficient clearance. The Red Top is rated at 800CCA.
I have always used Sears Gold DieHard batteries and they have always done me well. I once had an Interstate Megatron that died within 2 years. It's possible that I got a bad one, but that turned me off to them. Since then, it's been the gold DieHard and they have lasted years.
I've heard nothing but good about the Optima's, except in certain years, you need to perform modifications to get them to fit properly.
See above, the top positive post needs to be trimmed down.
I have an Exide/NAPA battery that's the equivalent of the Optima. In addition to trimming the top positive post, you'll need to remove the two tabs in the battery tray so the battery will physically fit.
Also, the fender may stick out slightly more than usual. In my case it didn't, but the fender is right up smack touching the battery.
