Hey guys I was checking my distributor today and it has a coil with the RED and WHITE wires.
I have another one with the RED and YELLOW wires.
I ohmed them out and can tell NO difference in them.
Are they interchangable?
Example:
I ordered a Hypertech Coil for my 91.
It came in a box that said it would work on 84-91 Corvettes.
Took the cap off my 91 Vette distrib. and it has the RED/WHITE coil in it. Been running with that in there for years.
The Hypertech Coil had RED/YELLOW wires.
Will it replace mine with the RED/WHITE wires?
I checked two distributors I had around the shop. One has RED/WHITE coil wires. The other had RED/YELLOW. The look alike in all other respects.
Confusing ain't it? What's the real scoop on these things????
well i am gonna say i have never found a differencs and have swapped hei coils like a cheap hoe.. i have run them both and have never had a prob.. i have ohm'd them as well .. i even asked an accel rep he really didn't have an answer either.. i would just run it .. but thats just my opinion

As I understand it the difference is in polarity. Just as in the olden days with points, reverse polarity to the coil, reduced coil performance, but it will run, either way. With merely a polarity difference, they would "ohm out" the same. Look at the colors of the wires to/from the module, and match the coil wire colors to the module wire colors. If it is original, the red/yellow combination should be correct.
I have swapped them between my Monte Carlo's (Red/Yellow) and my 442 (Red/White) no problem. Now, if you forget that little ground strap, that's a different story. It will run for awhile, but eventually burn up and may leave you stranded.
If you call Eckler's and ask to speak to a tech., they will tell you which one is correct for your car. I went through the same thing with mine and after calling them, I was told I need the red/white and after researching just to enure that he was correct, I learned that he was.
I have a RED/WHITE one in my 91.
HyperTech sent me a RED/YELLOW one.
It sounds like it doesn't matter.
I guess the most scientific test I can do is put the RED/YELLOW in there and see how long my IGN. module lives.
Wish there were some definitive information out there on this.
Sounds like the factory stuck whatever was on hand in there.
Could it be just the color of the insulation that was on the wire on the day the coil was wound?
