GT500 like the 1990 ZR-1?
Not sure if anyone noticed but '07 Ford GT500's, a sub 45K MSRP car, are selling for $70K+. I have to admit that I really wanted to pick up a GT500 and I would have paid MSRP, but jeez. I can't even imagine someone willing to pay more for a mustang than a Z06?? But I guess I'm biased.
I wonder if this will be like the 1990 ZR-1 changing hands for $100K, then dealers were giving them away for 55K less than two years later...

I agree...they are not comparable....supercars of today still struggle and most fall far short of the king of the hill 16 year old watermark.... it is still my favorite car on the planet just in front of a new callaway ZO6.

I know they are apples and oranges, it's just amazing that they are selling for so much over MSRP and it blows me away that someone would pay more for a GT500 than a new Z06

Corvettes and Mustangs aren't really in the same league anyway, are they ?
Shelbys being modified at the Shelby plant in Vegas are definately a step up from the off the showroom GT cars imho.
The Mustang advantage in market share is working like compound interest for Ford.
If I could have any Mustang, it would be the Boss 429... I wonder if Ford will ever try to work that into their marketing strategy like Mopar did with the hemi ?

Do you guys think that alot of the appeal and traffic for the GT500 could be belated nostalgia buys from "baby boomers" who couldn't afford the real Shelby GT's back in the 60's? Lord knows unless you have a fat wallet you're not buying any Shelby product from the 60's now...unless you have at least 100K to spend.
I know when I was in high school, 66 to 70, man those GT350's & 500's and the A/C Cobras were the cat's a$$. If you had one there was not much that could hang with you, even if you found something that cost as much as one of those cars. They weren't cheap! I knew a Ford Fleet Sales manager, my pop's friend, that bought a 67 427 Cobra new, that car was a touch over 7K!!! That's a ton of cash back in the late 60's. He still has the car and it still is one mean item, it can still give a fair account of itself against today's sports cars...only thing is that car is seriously lacking in creature comforts!

Magazines arent given just "any car" to test, you can bet your azz they are optimized/tuned before they are dumped in the hands of these hotshoes. JMO.
I bet the average driver hits a low 13, maybe a high 12 in one.

The people paying a nearly 100% premium for a car that's (no offense) a flash-in-the-pan, will experience painful resale value in short order.
Heck, I had real trouble paying a few hundred over sticker for my Z, but some low-mile used ones are still going @ or just above sticker; But these UBER-cars certainly should command their price because they can compete w/ cars costing 2, 3 and 4x their cost--not a 4k lb barely sub-13 sec. vehicle that can be purchased w/ a 6-cyl and steel wheels on a base platform.
The GT500 can't quite keep up w/ Z51 C6s that costs roughly the same--and it's a Mustang (again, no offense to 'Stangers)...
I believe the low-mile, mint '95 ZRs will be the next 'big-block mid-years' in 10-15 yrs

Sorry, but IMO anyone giving $70K for a GT500 should probably have their head examined. Have fun selling it for 1/2 that or less in 5 years.
