Re: 90 zr1 injectors
Just now got off of the phone with AC-Delco tech support.
AC-Delco has NEVER updated the design of this particular fuel injector to make it compatable with today's fuel.
Nor do they intend to EVER update the design or construction of this particular injector.
Their official stance is that the injector worked for the application it was designed for.
It's not their fault that todays gas is different than the gas 16 years ago.
They are not responsible for damage caused by people using "improper" gasoline in their cars.
Bottom line:
If you put new OEM AC-Delco fuel injectors in your ZR1...
THEY WILL FAIL.
And AC-Delco does not care.
Your car, your money, your decision.

Wait a minute.....I thought when the alky was added, GM changed the newer injectors to not be affected by the alky????
Not that I care. Mine quite and now I'm using RC's.

I have a couple injector questions. Was it a poor design or just the fact that a lot of ZR-1's don't get driven enough that causes the windings to short out. I had to replace mine but am pretty sure the car was stored and not driven for quite a while before I bought it. GM never really had that much injector trouble with their other vehicles in the late 80's and early 90's. I can see where if you don't open up the secondarys very often they could have some really stale varnishy fuel in them. The Rochester multec was supposed to be an improved design over the Bosch pintle design as far as self cleaning was concerned. The problem seems to be the seal to the solenoid coil. Do the 405hp cars with the commonised primary and secondary injectors have the same problem? You don't really hear much about injector problems on the later Z's

all 375 hp engine have old style injectors which gets eaten up by todays fuel additives, 405 hp engines have newer designs that dont fail. you CAN use newer injectors in 375 hp cars with Haibecks oring kit.

My '92 still has the original injectors and orings, and it gets driven about 2K year. Runs and idles greeaaaat! I dont believe this noise about contemporary fuel eating injectors.

FWIW, all four Delphi replacements, FJ10004 and FJ10005 for '90-92 and FJ10019 and FJ10020 for '93-95's are stated to have alcohol resistance to E10, or 10% ethanol.
You can search each part here: http://go.delphi.com I couldn't figure out how to link directly to each product.

Mine failed with a hot restart.
Drove the car 25-30 miles, city, freeway, country road, ran just fine, like always. Zoom Zoom.
Stopped at a buddy's house for an "adult beverage" and a little bench racing for 30-45 minutes.
Went to go home, and it started and drove like a Ford.
That's all it takes.

Fuel related injector failures
What do that sound like? This is a new one for me. My car is store in winters and only driven about 2K a year. Runs great and great idle. What should I expect in the future?

Just enough of a miss so that it didn't feel crisp like it normally does. Pulling away from a stop sign after about a mile, I could feel the miss in the seat of my pants. It smoothed out when I got up to speed. I popped the secondaries open a little bit on the on ramp of the freeway, and didn't feel the miss.
After the 25 mile or so ride home on the freeway, the idle at the freeway exit was painful.
The idle dropped down to about 500rpms was very rough and there was this awful rattle coming from somewhere under the car. (dual mass flywheel trying to tear itself apart)
Got it home and popped the hood. Did all the usual things, checked wires, plugs, hoses.
You know how we all brag about balancing a nickel on the plenum?
Mine was running so rough the nickel wouln't even have laid flat.
I had 1 injector coil short completely out (cylinder 4) and two others (cylinder 1 & 3) that were out of spec (one high and one low). So I wasn't firing on at least 2 cylinders, and maybe even down all three at idle.
She runs just fine, 16 fuel injectors and an ECM later.
I wound up having to replace the ECM too. Somehow when the injectors failed they took out the associated injector drivers with them.
It shouldn't have, but it did.
After I had replaced the injectors it still had the miss!!
Dang! Where did I go wrong my diagnosis? What did I miss?
Replaced the ECM, the miss went away.
I've still got a minor idle issue, she want's to load up a little on the cold start. I'm told it's a vacuum leak. Somewhere I've got a hose that's not sealing I guess. I'll find it.
