Default Windshield updates

Well, we've made some headway on the windshields. My contact went to China to meet with the windshield company, and it seems they are working on some product lines that will utilize a coated glass similar to ours. The company is making a special machine that is suited to coating the glass with the proper coating. The exciting part about this whole thing, is that it's going into other product lines as well, and that in itself increases the chances of being able to get a correct coated glass for our Z's. We still have a long way to go, but as we all knew, getting proper replacemet windshields wasn't going to be an easy task.

I'll keep everyone posted as more developments are made.

Just to clarify, our glass isn't "coated" so much as laminated with the solar film between layers... or so that's how I understood it.

Are they going to do the same or just "paint" the surface?

All windshields are laminated. The coating is the UV/heat resistant film that is applied between the layers. In regular C4's and other cars, the glass has certain heat resistant properties mixed in. These are batch glass. The batch glass works well at speed, but when the car is sitting still, the batch glass can only absorb so much heat, before it gets passed through to the cabin. The coated glass, like ours, will consistently reflect the harmful heat and UV. It doesn't absorb it at all.

So, how does the use of reflective sun "shields" on the inside of the window affect the lamination/coating? As you know, our sun here in Vegas can make window temps well over 150 degrees (and the shields make the window hotter).
