I was reading the "performance handbook" that came in my dads '90 care package, and it referenced an upshift light that was designed to come on at 5800rpm for max performance. I don't ever recall seeing this on his car and was wondering if it ever actually made it to production? Assuming it could be made to function (and set to a different point), it could be VERY handy. Can anyone provide more info?

You know Bob maybe correct. I replaced my OEM PROM with the updated PROM (ABYK???) and I haven't noticed my shift light since then.....ofcourse I also may not be looking at that spot on the dash. I'll have to go & see if it still works.
This gives me another excuse to use the secondaries.... I was speeding for research reasons officer. I had to check something on my dash.:o

Be careful...look what happened to ULY after the west gathering
even stock 5800 is too low anyway's. i believe 5800 RPM is close to or even right on peak power for a stock (or close to it) set-up. you'll want to shift 7%-10% higher than peak power so that put's your RPM around 6200 to 6400 RPM. general guidlines for factory/stock type set-up's.
Try driving in 4th or 5th at a high speed for over a minute. It should come on then.
Acording to the book, it is designed to opperate exactly as a shift light. The book claims that there is no performance benefit shifting much above that and definitely no benefit above 6500rpm. Of course this is for a stock engine. Never the less, the numbers did seem quite low to me too. So are the parameters for this light accessable in the prom? It would be very cool to have a stealth shift light that could be set in software to whatever you want. So does anybody have experience with programming the light? BTW, my dads '90 was bought new and until recently, had the stock prom. The light never functioned for him. His car is #865.

My car is #792, original chip, the Shift light works just fine.
So does the CAGS.
I will have to ask Haibeck if he keeps the shift light on his upgrade chip when I order one.
Original meaning GM or original meaning the one that the car shipped with? I think it's the latest calibration that disabled it. Maybe Todd P will jump in and shed some light.
The upgraded code from GM disables it. I discussed this with Marc when he did my chip. He went in and realized that the general disabled it by making it only operate when the coolant reached 800 degrees or something ridiculous. He switched it back to normal parameters and it works just fine again. It even works when I've been cruising in fifth for too long.

My prom is the same that the car was shipped with.

Yes, that is correct. It seems that sometime after introduction, the replacement GM calibrations disabled the shift light. It is a dual-purpose light, acting for economy when cruising in less than highest gear for too long, AND acting as a proper upshift light during hard acceleration.
It appears that the light function was disabled sometime around late 1990, or early 1991. The calibrations released after 9/11/1990 had the enable temp raised to 151C, but the capability is still in place. The first example of this shows up in AWYT (92MY) released in June 1991.
Interestingly, the code seems to be completely removed from the 93-95 calibrations.

So...is there a way to manipulate it? I'm going to be burning my own proms using tunercat to make changes. I'd really like to utilize this feature.

The light is far too small to make any difference - if you're really looking for it, your eyes are off the road far too much - your peripheral vision will not pick it up. My LPE chip had it enabled - it was cool to see a few times, but definitely not even close to serving as a real shift light like I have in the vent of my 90 - when I comes on, it is like a tiny piece of the sun if opened up in the vent!
