Can anyone confirm the fluid for the ZF trans? I was unable to locate on a search but if I recall is it from BMW and its a 10W60 weight?

10W60 BMW P/N 07510009420

You need three bottles and will use 2.3 of the bottles.

Good thing your here Jeff...you seem to have all the correct answers. I am using GMs recommended fluid but will change next spring to this BMW oil.

You guys do realize it's just motor oil... right! The original fill was a 5-30 weight. ZF later spec'd the 10-60wt for replacement, very hard to come by, it just so happens that BMW uses the same....

I'm currently running Mobil1 5-30 in mine. Many have used it for years.

I have used the RedLine oil and it
This was with high speeds 150+ for 10miles. It was also stiff to put in 5and 6th.

Running the BMW and the problem has gone away.

I bought the BMW castrol oil today and in typical Canadian fashion I got screwed over price wise for the oil. $20 bucks a quart but figured what the hell. I need the oil. I was curious as to the viscosity of the 10W60 being thicker than the 5W30 OEM stuff and possible lubrication concerns? Anybody have issues with the Castrol oil? I hear nohing but good things?

I dumped the Redline in favor of the Castrol (BMW) juice. Much better IMO.

Well, it won't be heavier for long. It seems the viscosity drops quickly with that stuff.

Honestly with the amount of particulates you can see in the oil, and Bill B's synchro wearing in his test, the Castrol stuff doesn't seem so great to me. But I guess anything else is an unknown gamble vs a known one.

As said, it is just engine oil, so I wonder if Mobil 1 wouldn't be a good bet? Since the OEM oil is discontinued, I guess anything is a gamble now, even the GM stuff.

I dont use all that fancy stuff...

Go to PepBoys and pick up a couple bottle of Pennzoil syncromesh, I think mine took around 2 and a half bottles. Grab a hand pump for $8 and go to town. Shiifts like a dream.

So Mike...Is the BMW oil made by Castrol?, if so I would think it could be purchased somewhere much cheaper then 20 a quart.

LOL @ typical Canadian fashion....no kidding.

The ZF.Doc just topped mine off a week ago and it was BMW juice all the way.

How much diference can one synthetic oil make over another when it come to a transmission application like this ?

I lost a trans with Redline in it already... so... no more redline for me until somebody can explain and prove why it beats any other brand. I have the Castrol oil now, but would consider Amsoil after learning how good it suppose to be.

Pennzoil ? I have used it before with no noticeable differences in shifting feel.

I've seen a couple of trans with redline foaming, so I can see why you toasted a trans.

Hey Tom, apparently this stuff comes straight from Germany and it is only available through BMW....as I understand anyway. I have the OEM stuff in the trans now but will change the fluid again shortly with the Castrol and see if I notice any difference.

Want me to buy a case for you Canucks?

Thanks for the offer Jeff but I'm done for a while now anyway. I'll hopefully have that parts order for you shortly.

Yes, the Castrol is expensive....but no more than an oil change and a lot less often.

I changed mine because I just didn't like what I was hearing from the Redline....AND after calling the ZF people and talking to them.
