Default [Shifter ****] What's the trick to getting it off?

I've got the manual out, looks like they are calling something a cotter pin? How does it come out? Trying not to break anything. Gonna send the tranny off to BB. Someone want to call and walk me through the shifter? PM me.Thanks!

So far took the pattern button out, and the socket head set screw.....

Remove the shift pattern. Take two flatblade screwdrivers and pry from the corners. I've had some that come out with no work at all. I've had some that I have had to pound out.

Jeff - you forgot the rest...

After you get the shift pattern cover off the grip you will need to remove the Cotter Key from the grove in the shifter. The best way I know to do this is to remove the roof panel and stand directly over the shifter. Take a pair of vice grips and grab the end of the key. Next is the hard part...

Pull that sucker out of the slot!

Cheers,
RH

Default The "easiest"!

If you're familiar with a dent puller, knocker or a slide hammer drill an 1/8 or 3/16 hole maybe 3/8 deep and 35 or 40 seconds your work will be DONE! You'll not bust your A$$ and you can leave the top in the car etc, You'll not ruin a thing. Here's a link to a discussion regarding the same:

If you're not familiar with the tool and know a "body man" he'll fix you up in a hearbeat!

here's a link to the type of puller I'm referring to:

I'm not sure but Autozone, Advance and those places might have a loaner!

Got it.......thanks gang. Screwdrivers worked, and I don't think I damaged the shifter ****. Now is the carmel colored glue around the base of the shifter boot lip from the factory, or is that mess from a previous owners spilled Pepsi!

I did the drill/tap method, but used a screw thru a big fender washer with a jam-nut arrangement against the washer. Then I just turned the screw (like a harmonic balancer puller concept) and the key slipped right out. No muss no fuss and never broke a sweat!
