Default Scanner Tips

What is the preferred engine code scanner/reader for OBD II and the early cars? What do we do for the ZR-1 as most of them do not cover pre 96? Are there preferred or just basic units available?
Thanks for any input!!

You want something that reads both OBD-II and OBD-I? Or are you just asking what works on older cars?

For datalogging, a laptop can't be beat. Those handheld tools just can't hold as much data as a laptop can.

What is your intended use?
