A tech 1 goes for about $300.00. Then you need to get the proper cartridge. There is a Mass Storage Cartridge that can be programmed for all OBD1 Gm cars, you will need a GM dealer to program it.

So is this Mass Storage cartridge a must have even if you have individual ones? Will GM need to program those as well? Does this mean I wont be able to do anything at all with the $300. tool I buy?
Sorry bout all the ?'s....I tried to PM you, dont know if you got it or not.
Cartridges come in different years and systems. Like 89 engine, 90 drive train? Something like that. When you buy the Tech 1 the seller will list what cartridges come with the unit. Sometimes you can buy loose cartridges on E-Bay

I understand that, thank you. BUT, does this mean I need to have GM program any of them or is that only for the Mass Storage one? Will I need individual cartridges AND the Mass Storage cartridge or only either of the 2? Sorry, never used the system before
Only the Mass Storage cartridge can be programmed. All the other's are use as is. They should work on any year PRIOR to their labeled year.
No, you do not need the MSC. The MSC can be programmed for ALL OBD1 GM vehicles, that is what makes it nice to have.

Ahhh, got ya! so if it says 88-92....it wont work on my 92 ZR1?
What are your intentions with the TECH1? I've a TECH1 I've considered selling that has a primary cartridge for GM '81-'94/ FOMOCO '81-'93/ CHRYSLER '83-'93 "POWER-TRAIN". The cartridge is P/N 02001718. Engine/electronic trans etc.
I've the TA01139B ALDL connector that does most GM except some early TPI cars but I believe I've got that adapter also. It does our ZR1's except those with the OBD2 style connector('94/'95 I think?) I've a pretty good assortment of other GM cartridges ABS etc that I would have to sort through and see which I could include. If you feel it's something you might be interested in contact me.
The year of the primary use I would think important.
I would think it would.
I was thinking if it said 92, it would work on any year before 92 and also the 92. I have no idea about ZR-1 using a special ZR-1 cartridge? Maybe somebody with a ZR-1 knows?
There is no ZR1 "special cartridge"! What I meant is the years he was interested in using it on. If he's a '94/'95 I don't believe I have that connector but if it's for anything '93 and earlier I've got the correct cable and the TPI adapter needed for I believe the '89-'91 TPI Corvette's, Camaro's and Firebird's. It's not needed on the ZR1's!

I was not responding to your post. I was still typing when you posted, sorry for the confusion.

Thank you Dave....I want the T1 for use on my ZR1 primarily...but would be able to use it on my 95 pick-up and other cars & trucks that I might flip...I have a bid on one on the unmentionable site......I would be interested in yours if I dont get the other one. Also, if you have a cartridge or connector you dont want that I need, then perhaps we can get together.
John
if you want to use a Tech 1 on a 95 you'll need a DLC 12/16 pin adapter, 12= OBD 1 & 16 = OBD 2. 95's are OBD 1 but use the 16 pin OBD 2 connection. they were getting tooled up for the new stuff. also to do BODY control you need a GM pin E ALDL adapter .
