even i'm not owning a zr-1, i want to ask for your help. a friend of mine in austria (europe) want's to put performance headers on his zr-1.
any recommendations?
anybody going to sell his'/hers used/new perf. headers?
any help is appreciated.
greetings from detroit and the austrian corcette club international.
jeals are a nice header, kinda pricey. Brian A. I believe is gearing up and making new headers. from what I know, watsons are now only available used. great mod, 20-30 HP without the cats and really helps high rpm breathing. I have used coated watsons, not as nice as the jeals, but still effective. factory manifolds aren't all that great, but not horrible either.
cats flow pretty well in comparison to other factory stuff IMHO. :D
Ron, et al:
Yes, I am now building headers. I have shipped 5 sets to date. Build time is 4-6 weeks, cost is 895 plus 50 bucks shipping. These are all one piece primaries, 2" 304 stainless.

Re: header question (gmanZR1)
This may be a stupid question, but your headers won't work with the cats?
None of the headers do unless you put them in after the collectors. The stock headers at least on the early cars are one piece. The cat is part of the manifold.
I'm very interested in purchasing a pair of headers for my '91 ZR-1, but I'm very concerned about not passing emissions since the hearders don't allow for Cats. I have emission inspections every other year and don't want to risk failing. What are you guys doing to pass emissions?
I use random "bullet cats" the collectors of the watson headers I have are modified and shortened up just a bit to let the small cats fit where they should.
most headers also don't have provisions for the air injection. while not really needed IMHO to pass the sniffer test, they are part of the factory setup and a sharp inspector will fail you if you don't have them hooked up. most techs have never even seen an LT5 and since the engine covers up the exh pretty well, I think you may get by.
with the fresh random cats in place, the car should pass ok. just get it really hot with some "spirited" driving for a about 20 min before you go. I also sometimes throw a bit of alchy in the tank to clean it up. works well.
As far as inspections, I usually get the $100 inspection, $50 for the inspection and $50 for the guy that passes you.
Otherwise, you have two options, use the bullet cats from Random and have a muffler shop install them or you can contact Marc Haibeck. He is in the process of designing some that have it so that the cats can be installed by anyone with a socket set and a set of wrenches. When the inspection is passed, you can replace them with a straight pipe supplied with the kit without having to remove the exhaust system.
Does anybody have any sotp or real numbers to show a benefit (or lack of) running headers w/o cats vs. stock manifolds w/ gutted cats? For stockers, 475hp, and 368s, as I assume the benefit get greater as the HP goes up.
The headers/cats Ron is using are the ones I used to have on my '90. It didn't need anything to pass emissions, passed them pretty easily (better than the old cats did). The trick is to get them to pass *without* cats :)
THanks for posting the pics!!:) Re: the luster of the headers.. The Jeal's pictured are either 1)polished or 2)ceramic coated... Also, Watson headers are not shiny at all. They are 409 Stainless and when I received my set of two years ago they had already started to rust(409 stainless *will* rust). Both Jeal headers and my option are 304 Stainless. Again, thanks for posting the pics!!:) Still not sure why the url I posed doesn't work; I can type it in and it works just fine?!?!?!

Re: header question (ZR WON)
No problem on posting the pics. geocities only allows you so much data transfer, they want you to pay for a business site which sucks. Have you tried polishing a set of yours up to see what kind of luster you can get? I might be picking up a pair this spring from you instead of doing the Jeal. Send me an email if you don't mind.... jeff2577@yahoo.com
Brian I knew I should not have let you take pictures of the ones I had smuggled from England! I do have a question about the different muffler connectors on each side. Why not use the rounded connector on both sides? Seems like it would make things easier, but both you and Jeff just use it on one side ???

Actually the Watsons have fairly wide variations in finish, depending on when they were fabricated and who did the work. Mine are HPC coated and have a nice satin finish. Mine were done around '95 and look great.
Brian,
What about 02 sensors? Does your headers allow for them to hook up?
If the O2 sensors aren't connected or hooked up properly, that will set codes, right?
Thanks,
