Default ignition module?

Is the ignition module the same on the 90 zr1s and l98s?

Dealer said it needs tobe replaced, to fix a tacometer problem, and I just want to make sure they put the right one in.

Completely different ignition system. The modules are different. L98 uses a distributor, and the module is mounted there. No distributor in the LT5.

Do you know how much an lt5 ignition module goes for?

Just trying to dictate by price if they are installing the right one

Have the dealer break out the factory service manual and use the troubleshooting guide before they start throwing parts at it. The part is called direct ignition system module. page 8A-22-9 in my 91 FSM.

I mean i have not dealt with this dealership before, they are a big chevy dealer in the area.
I called to double check they know they are working with an LT5 and they said yeah, their corvette tech, has been working on vettes for 40 years and he is sure he has the right part.

What is my liability if the dealer installs the wrong part, or the part they install does not fix the issue?

Default yes

yes they said the ignition module, as well as controlling spart plug when they fire etc, that is also relays information regarding revolutions, which goes to the tach.

When they first said it, i was like is it the tach filter?
And they go no its the ignition module.

Is your tach "erratic" or just doesn't work?

A '90 tach is notorious for "incremental" error. In '03 mine was maybe 10% high most of the time, in '06 it was maybe 20% high, it's become very erratic this year and I'm quite confident it's related to the cluster circuitry. I've had conversations with a fellow who does tach calibrations for most of the Corvette "mail order" vendors and he feels the same and has pretty much ID'd the capacitors that control it. Maybe this winter I'll let him have "at it"!

If yours is just erratic and very high I'd get the cluster repaired. There are independent vendors for the repairs and the dealership where your car is should be able to do and "advance exchange" or arrange for a repair of yours. It should be accompanied with a 12 month warranty when done.

I could do this with mine also but I'd like to give the fellow a go at it and if it's a confirmed "fix" it will be something to pass-on.

If you've "NO TACH SIGNAL" yes it's a possible diagnosis!

Where are you located? I'd be interested to speak to you!!

You can likely "confirm" what I've mentioned and "shorten" the diagnostics! Using a Tech1 or similar diagnostic device attach it to the ALDL and if you've got a "CORRECT and CONSISTENT" tach value you've "confirmed" I'm quite sure what I've mentioned. Mine has been confirmed with my Tech1 and also Diacom. All you need to compare is RPM's to MPH! I would have thought this was a first step in diagnostics at a "dealership" level! Again if you've "NO SIGNAL" anywhere maybe they're good with the diagnostics!!

I am located in indiana.
Mine is not eratic, it just flat doesnt work.

They said the guage was fine and supposly tested it, and this is what he came too.

I thought 400 installed for the module was cheap related to what i see on here, expensive to me, to just get a tach repaired though

I guess i will let them try, and will report back in the next day or two.

Well if they fit the L98 Module on the LT5 I will be amazed..

L98 Ignition module is smaller then a pack of cigarettes..

the LT 5 Ignition module is about 1/2" thick and roughly 4.5" x 6.5"

I think the Tach not working is either:

-Bad wire to Cluster
-Bad Cluster
-Bad tach filter ( if the LT5 even has one)

lastly it could be the IM but I am doubting it

The diagnostics appear pretty straight forward and I'd only suggest the check at the ALDL for a "tach signal" and if it appears to be consistent and correct for the approriate speed while driving with the Tech1 or "whatever" attatched. I've only ever seen the "cluster/tach" tester they mention in the FSM a couple times and not in the past 10-12 years for sure!

I mention mine being "very erratic" this year and yes from time to time it's "completely dead"!!

Run a search on "fleabay" for LT5 ignition module. There is one listed for $550. Also, to install, plenum has to be pulled. I figure 2 hrs, maybe?

I can't imagine Chevy dealer voluntarily giving you deep discount on part and installing it at cut rate.

I would check and make sure that it is indeed the "ignition module". If so, that they are pricing a correct one.

I just ran a search for 1990 Corvette ignition module on gmpartsdirect.com and only one showing up is for 84-91 for $67. This is obviously for L98 and one for LT5 doesn't even show.

And the part is still available. Only question is is this realy the ignition module? Bill wasn't sure.

That's the right part according to the illustration. I'll take 10 of them for that price. I have a spare one and the PN for it 1103841. That's on the module itself. I'm incredibly skeptical.

Talk to Bill at P&G Chevrolet. I think his last name is Marko. Outstanding service.

Id have the dealer that quoted that price order one and have them order it and if its the correct one Id buy it if not its there part because the computer is wrong.
