Here is the pic that shows how much smaller the Sumitomos are compared to Goodyears. Reckon the GYs cost more because they have more rubber.

I think it's the same with the Vredesteins, they are not as wide

Put another notch for the GS-D3's. I love those tires. They handle great, ride great, and look great!!!

I saw a pair of Sumotomo's on a ZR-1 and it looked like the tire was 'stretched' on the rim. This picture confirms that.

And they are QUIET!

Better to hear the Heart-Of-The-Beast as it sings to 7000+rpm!

No they don't, they look good.

They ride great even in the rain and they are cheap.

I know guys that drag race on them. Good tire for the price.

Default Tires

Car is not raced or tracked. Basically for show, cruises and caravan's.
Goodyears.................$1200
Kumho Ecsta XC.........$710
Sumitomo HTRZ..........$510
Not much out there to choose from with this tire size.
Anybody with any thoughts on the Kumho's or Sumitomo's?
I have the Kumhos on my car and they are great. They can be used as track tires (very sticky ) and street tires. My car actually rides better on these than the Goodyears. I have the Sumitomos on my Porsche and they are also Great. I am a tireRack Dealer and I highly reccommend these tires-V

A question those looking to replace might also have.
I believe I was running the P285/40ZR-17 on the front with p335-35ZR 17's on th rear with the Fikse's (Is that right David, LT5Corsa ).

My question is if I change my current fronts from 275 to 285, while I work on using up the current 315 rears, might there be any mismatch issues with the any of the sensors or ECM until adding the 335's?

Thinking of switching to the Nitto N55 Extreme Performance, as I also dislike the look of the tread pattern of the Good Years.( What can I say, I thought I was the only one who disliked it )

I tried Sumitomos two years ago, and I have not had any problems! I got caught in the rain (heavy) on I65 once and didn't experience any issues at 60-70 mph. My only complaint is that they have "very round corners" so when combined with the narrower contact patch, the difference in width is somewhat noticable. The installer also noted that the way they grip the rim made it difficult to install them, but it hasn't affected the seal at all.

Bottom line - after 2 years and 4,500 miles - no issues. I might consider alternatives next time because of the look (more curvey corners and narrower contact patch), but I am not sold yet on the patterns on some of the more expensive alternatives.

Yep, those are what I'm most likely going with. What sizes did you go with?

I'd like to see the patterns of the Kumo, Nitto, Pirell & Michelin if anyone has to post...
This is the problem I have had with most of these newer tires. I just can't handle their appearance. That is the reason alone, that I have stored up on GS-C's. I love their looks. I'd love it even better if Goodyear produced an update version of this tire with the newer/better compounds.

quote c1andzr1 I can tell you from experience, don't get the Sumitomos. I basically gave them away with less than 100 miles on them with another set of wheels.
i still have those wheels and tires on my zr1 you should have ran them for more than 100 miles i have had no issues.you did give them away .thanks for the great deal

Default Sumi's

All tires have their good and bad points. As far as the Sumi's go I have run a bunch of em. Before I go on though, it seldom rains out here and when it does I am usually not driving in it. I don't avoid the rain as a rule... I just don't like the extra work of having to clean up the Z.

All that said... I have run the Sumi's in the Silver State in the 150 class and averaged 156 with spurts up to 180+. What was it like on those tires ? IT WAS Great ! However, It wasn't that way the 1st few miles. When leaving the starting line I did a about 200 ft tire smoking holeshot with the 3:07 gears ( they kept telling us to have fun at the event ! ) so the rear tires were stickier than the front tires in the beginning. As I guided the car around the 1st few curves at about 165+ the car steered very stubbornly. I was saying to my self at that point if something didn't improve steering wise during this 90 run this drive was going to suck. Well... about 5 or 6 miles into the run when the front tire were getting warmed up the steering got real predictable and comfortable. I don't have another brand of tire to compare those Sumi's with under the same circumstances, however, the car drove in a manner I would expect... and I felt very comfortable all during the run with the grip I was getting from those tires.

Now, I grant you a one thing... they ain't the prettiest tires. All that said, I sure don't mind smoking them when the desires strikes... who cares ! Their cheap tires! Just burn em up and buy some more... I wouldn't be smoking em much if they were Goodyears, that is for sure. My wear typical ratio is 2 sets of rears to one set of fronts.

I will be trying out some other tires when I can... the Nittos look like great tires for the money.

So, for the life of me I don't know why some of you "hate" Sumi's... if they were a bad tire I would have known it a long time ago. I have run Goodyears, BFGs, Pirelli's... all of them were fine except they all cost more and for the better part of the life of the tire only last longer if they get old and hard.

If any of you have some new, or near new Sumitomos laying around and don't want em any more just let me know... we will figure out something.

Okay. Ended up with a set of Nitto's. Nice tread design, good price from Discount tire on-line with free delivery. Had a 4 wheel alignment and ready to go again!

Marty,

Get the Kuhmo's like Rudolph, those are the best tires to get... Yes 285 and 335 on your old Fikses. Thanks!

Love the slightly larger wheels that can handle more "meat"
