I am aware that when the ZR1's came from the factory the plugs are gapped at 35. Has any one every heard that by putting in Platinum Plugs gapped at 50, would get better performance. If so, I don't believe they would last as long as plugs gapped at 35. Thank You.
A bigger gap will have a longer, more exposed spark, but the total energy available is the total energy available, so in order to jump a bigger gap, some of the spark duration will be sacrificed. I believe in opening the gap only wide enough to get the max potential hp. You need some spark duration to get a complete burn if the fuel isn't perfectly atomized.
you could try lower resistance wires and such, but I believe that tends to be harder on coil lifespan.
I also believe that lower gaps were preferred with non-rare earth tipped plug electrodes because they would widen up a lot as the miles eroded the material away and would need to be serviced more often. I'm fine with .035 on regular el-cheapo AC's and just running them for a couple of years.
