Got in the car today and the stereo doesn't work at all. The radio had been working intermittently but the cd player always worked. Now nothing. Antenna doesn't go up, clock displays 1:00 all the time and never changes, put a cd in but it won't play, it will eject. Is it new stereo/rebuild time?
If the CDM (radio rcvr) is disconnected, the head unit won't even power up. There is a specific diagnostic in the service manual to determine which is bad...but either way, seems par for the course on the delco/bose system.
Thanks for the replys and info. I like the new system but didn't you have to replace speakers and all? You didn't have to cut anything up so it looks like it's a nice fit.
How do you replace the cdm? Is there a post on the subject on here?

Car Toys did the installation, and they had a number of speakers that just fit into the original enclosures. I can't remember which one's I installed.
They didn't have to cut up anything. Plus, that red button in the ash tray? It is a manual switch for the electric antenna.

The early cars- CDM unit under pass dash side (difficult)
later cars- in the storage bucket area behind seats- easy.
I was able to remove the dash mounted CDM in about 40 minutes, but I bent the crap out of the plastic holder (amazingly it did not get damaged or even overstressed). Pull off the kick panel cover. locate the CDM which is on top off a rectangular plastic tray that has all kinds of parts attached to it. There are two nuts holding the sides tight, take those off and pull the plastic mounting tabs away and pop it out. Then pull the unit forward (forward on car, not towards you) and then down at an angel enough to get at the wiring- pull the wiring off each side- take a pic to make it easier to remember where each plug went (don't worry- they are all different sizes and are idiot proof). once it gets loose enough, you will just angle it down on one corner until you see the antenna- pop that off and you should then have it in your hand.
If you do not want to take a chance at damaging any off it, pull out the seat and work on your back more carefully.
Now that I know the trick, I could probably pull it out in 15 minutes.

Wifey's 91 failed the same way - it's the 'CDM' and Dr Don repaired it for $150. According to Don, the 5 volt power supply has failed.
Replaced the CDM with one I found on ebay. The radio and cd player now appear to work butno sound and the antenna still doesn't work. I emailed the guy that sold it to me and he thinks it's the master Bose relay. Any thoughts?

I have the benefit from living a few miles down the road from a vette dismantler so I was able to try 2 or 3 different CDM's before I bought one. What i found was that the later style did not work on my 91, but did allow the face on the radio to light up and display the time- but that's it.
All the plug-ins are identical, but only the one I tried with the exact same decal and look to the one I was replacing worked. There's a chance I tried a bad one in the mix, but clearly the later style ones with velcro mounts did not have audio.
