Default Headers and backfire???

Do ZR1s always backfire after headers are put on? What causes this and is there anything you can do to avoid it?

Yep, you will get backfire. The stock prom has extra fuel added for the cats and it runs rich. When you remove the cats and lessen the back pressure the exiting spent carge contains some unburnt fuel. This fuel builds up rapidly when you are under hard acceleration and let off suddenly. When this occurs you the unspent fuel in the exhaust will eventually ignite and you will get the characteristic backfire. This can be eliminated by chip tuning.

Who can provide such a chip? My car has gutted cats, and the popping is really starting to bother me....

good chip guys

Marc Randolf (too busy for a while)
SGC Aaron Scott
ZR1 (jim milstead)
Ron Zimmer

and recently added to the bit twiddlers

Marc Haibeck

all these guys seem to know what they are doing.

the"closed throttle" fuel is really the problem, and all that fuel going into the exhaust doesn't really hurt anything, it's just annoying.

with the "bullet cats" this doesn't happen too bad.

I'd be interested in the chip mod too.

let me know who you go with. I have some chip tuning chores to do as well.

Must not be a problem for all ZR-1's w/headers as my car has never done it. I've been in a few other header-equipped ZR-1's that wouldn't,either. Strange, huh.

They were probably not running with stock chips I would think.
