C7 Tech
I don't know a lot of specifics for the new C7, but I do know that it is now using carbon fiber. I bring this up because I remember saying this could be done to offset the weight gain of DOHC, plus moving the engine to the rear/middle would increase visibility up front. Of course, I received the comment the using carbon fiber would make us ricers..... I'm not necessarily advocating returning to DOHC (though I would love that), I just wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on where they go from here. It's still early, obviously, but it's fun to think about it. My bet goes toward either AWD while keeping front engine design, or moving to rear/mid engine design to put the power on top of the drive wheels. I couldn't imagine putting to much more useful power in a rear wheel, front engine car. Thoughts.....

Carbon fiber is only ricer if you don't paint the panel...and even then, the C6 ZR-1 has a clear coat over the CF roof lol- is it ricer if it comes stock?. Seems to me that some of the import crowd just had cleared over CF body panels to flaunt the expense of it- sort of like spending $8000 on wheels if you own a high end euro car. I prefer to know I have lightweight panels but had the class to paint them so the car looks normal.

The 2004 CE Z06 had a CF hood. It weighed 2/3 of the stock SMC hood. It was definitely not a ricer hood.

Yes, and that spells a sad day for sports cars in general. I'm sure 50mpg won't be the requirement, but it will be high. We will see more electric and weight savings in our corvettes.

Well, you can put 1200 hp in an engine, but it has to be effectively put to the wheels. Chevy wants the vette to be able to go around a track as fast as possible, so we''re talking suspension, and a lighter car is easier to maneuver. I'm thinking an all wheel drive vette is in our future.

So, I recently read a highlight about the new October issue of C&D, which is likely not set in stone. It's talking about a new Corvette coming in 2017 (the most unbelievable part of all of this) codenamed Zora (we've heard this name before) that will be mid-engined. While I do believe this is where we are heading, and the sketch is a reasonable design for the mid-engined Vette, I highly doubt we will see it in a mere 3 years after the C7 just arrived. I'm betting more like 2020. So, I will begin my saving...... NOW!
