Default Does c beam have to be remove?

1989 automatic. Does the c beam have to be removed to drop drive shaft
I have heard some say it does and others say it does not. I would like not to remove beam if I don't have to

Just for info, I get a loud clunk when I slap the gas pedal and sometimes when shifting up or down with no stress on the drive line. I am hopping it's
A u joint in drive shaft or half shafts. Transmission seems ok. Only 48000 miles, but has made noise since I got car 2 years ago but seems to be getting worse

Thanking every one in advance

Mike

Mike...you posted in the ZR-1 section and we all have 6 speeds so I can't help you with an 89 automatic. Maybe somebody could chime in and give you some help. Good luck!

Drive shaft will come out without removing the c beam.
