Default 91 code reading

Working on a 91 Z and trying to retrieve ecm trouble codes. My research shows that the ZR1 will not read codes like a typical 91. If that's true is there an inexpensive code reader available that will work on the Z? Or, is my research wrong? When I jump the proper ADL terminals the SES light does not flash codes,

Thanks

Search Craigslist or Ebay for an MT2500 Snap-On scanner. They are outdated so you should have no problem picking one up for 2-300 dollars. Make sure it comes with the GM cartridge and the troubleshooter cartridge. Back in the day this was an expensive scanner. What I like about using it with the ZR-1 is that you also have full access to the ABS, ride control, and airbag systems. It can also activate the secondaries, radiator fans, and whatnot while the engine is off so you can do operational checks without driving the car. I imaging newer scanners can do this as well but they will be more expensive. My MT2500 cannot do everything a new scanner can but I am not running a garage with different vehicles coming and going all day. You can also look for a GM Tech one but they are more expensive as well.

Default ALDL Fault Code Flasher/Eraser

See ALDL Fault Code Flasher/Eraser

The ALDL Fault Code Flasher/Eraser can be plugged into the present ALDL Socket under the Drivers Side Panel. The ALDL Fault Code Flasher/Eraser will ground the appropriate connectors of the ALDL when depressing and holding any of five Buttons depressed and turning the ignition ON....(not all the way to START). The Fault Codes are flashed on the Panel just above the Bose Radio and the CCM Fault Codes flashed on the Speedometer Cluster. This ALDL Fault Code Flasher/Eraser Module has a 12 Pin ALDL Connector which is compatible with 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993 ZR-1s.

Green is ECM the one you are mostly interested in for Engine Issues.
Yellow SRC or Ride Control....FX3 shocks are Yellow.
Black is ABS....Wheels are Black.
CCM is White Elephant.....as the codes are read on the Speedo Cluster....
Red is SIR or INFL REST .......the HOT Button.....or the Button to check the Issues related to Safety.

The Fault Code Flasher will read:
1. ECM (SERVICE ENGINE SOON on Panel) Green Button
2. SRC (SERVICE RIDE CONTROL on Panel) Yellow Button
3. ABS (SERVICE ABS on Panel) Black Button
4. CCM (CCM Fault Codes on Speedometer Cluster) White Button
5. SIR (INFL REST on Panel) Red Button

It will have 5 colored mini switches (Push Buttons) mounted on a Billet Aluminum small block connected to an ALDL Connector (24 inch lead) that plugs into the ALDL under Drivers Side panel.

To Read the Fault Codes while sitting in the Drivers Seat......just plug the ALDL Fault Code Flasher/Eraser into ALDL and push/Hold Green Button for ECM (Yellow Button for SRC, Black Button for ABS, White Button for CCM, Red Button for SIR then turn the ignition switch ON (Do NOT start the engine) and see the Fault Codes flash on the Panel above the Bose Radio.

SERVICE ENGINE SOON........................................ ......................SERVICE RIDE CONTROL

SERVICE ABS ........................................ .....................................CCM Fault Codes

INFL REST

To Erase Fault Codes....Depress/Hold the appropriate Diagnostic Button and turn the Ignition Key ON....(not all the way to START). Wait for the Diagnostic light to start flashing for the Button Depressed. Release the Button for 3 seconds and then Depress/Hold the Button for about 3 seconds and Release. Turn the Ignition Key OFF.

To check that Fault Codes are Erased Depress/Hold the appropriate Diagnostic Button and turn the Ignition Key to On (do NOT Start the engine). The Code 12 should appear continuously indicating ALL Fault Codes are cleared.

Either I don't have the correct cartridge or the MT2500 cannot read the Ride Control lights. It can do the ABS, Engine, and Air bag stuff.

Do you have an MT2500? I would love to be able to clear all systems codes with the MT2500.

As far as I can remember it did. Once I had every fault code for the ride control stored on the car, and I remember thinking that it was most likely the computer just needed resetting like rebooting your home laptop. I cleared the codes no problem. An interesting read on the above code reader as I thought you couldn't clear fault codes on the airbag system. The light will reset off but the code will still be stored in memory as being present, much like there is a past problem with the system and currently there is not a present one. For instance, on my tire pressure system there is no service light illuminated but if I use my scanner I will get a code for each wheel sensor so I assume they are all removed by previous owner.

As far as why you are having suspension code reading problems and I am not is unknown to me.

Do you still have a MT2500 and actively use it? I want to figure this out as it was the primary reason for buying the MT2500.
