ZF fluid
Sent an email form into the local BMW dealership getting a price on the oil for the tranny. One of the blanks you had to fill out was year and series. I could care less so put 2003 3 series. They called all freaked out asking why I was changing the fluid already and why I requested this specific part number.
At the dealer here it is $9.xx a bottle. Gets pretty expensive quick but the castrol stuff works good, huh?
Just think if you had one of those M5 motors. The guy behind the counter told me those 5 motors take about 8 or 9 quarts (or is it liters). Now we thought an oil change with Mobile1 was expensive..... ouch.
From his site on trans oil;;;;;TRANSMISSION OIL (status) - Vascular flow of oil through the porous Phosphorus-bronze (Pb) material of each synchronizer is essential for effective British Thermal Unit (BTU) heat exchange occurrence. Frequent transmission oil changes will ensure lower Pb particle levels suspended in the oil. The ZF S6-40 6-speed transmission is lubricated by engine type oil. Manufacturer recommendations specify the use of GM P/N 1052931 (5w-30) or BMW P/N 07510009420 (10w-60) oil.
Approximate oil capacity of the ZF S6-40 is 2.2 quarts.
FYI - the BMW 10w-60 oil is fully-synthetic and is used in the BMW M5 engine.
The oil fill/drain plug GM P/N is 10140673.
The Beamer oil is the correct spec, and Jeff I have to compliment you on your engine pics (another thread)... the only real engine Chevy has 'built' since the 265
But on this topic I have to tell a story (of course!)..... was at local BMW dealer picking up oil for the ZF, was at the parts counter with a harried lady wanting something or another, this was lunchtime of course, and the harried lady looks at me and -- in sympathy -- looks at me and says:
"What's the problem with your car?"
I was wearing a polo shirt with the ZR-1 logo. She had no clue, of course.
Before I can answer, the parts manager walks up, knew what I was looking for, overheard her question, and says:
"He has no problem. He has a ZR-1."
Honest true story. I was the proudest person in that BMW dealership. She still had no clue, but I and the parts manager did.
