I want to attempt to clean my Enigne ... it is pretty bad.. the last owner painted a Black line down the middle and the letterings looks like it was done with figure paint.. I am thinking about using a Dremal to try and fix it. anyone have any idea what the best bit would be to kind of sand it down and another one to polish it and start over?
What ever you choose, do it with the engine COLD. If you use any solvent to remove the paint, it will darken the gray. If you are going to repaint it anyway, my do anything magic liquid is 3M adhesive remover. You never know. A dremel can get out of hand in a hurry with the "little" bit and fast speed. I would be very careful as to not pit the metal. Sounds like I've tried this before. The dremel and polish can over stress the paint in a fast hurry. Take your time on a low rpm. LPE has the best matching paint. Clean it with alcohol then distilled water. Oh, and try it on a non visible part first, not the top of the plenum. Good Luck.
If it is as bad as you say, why not pull the plenum and cam covers, sand them and repaint them then clear coat them. I plan to do that in the near future.
Thanks guys.. I have thought about pulling the plenum and cleaning it The Cam Covers aren't too bad.. I soon as I can I will get some Pictures up of the engine so that you can get a better idea what I am dealing with.
Good luck to you...try a scotchbrite pad as well. Remember, if armor all or anything like it gets of the engine and it gets hot......the finish is RUINED
if you can post some pictures It would be easier to asist in this venture.
I pulled all of my parts and repainted them cost me the paint and the dowrdy washer for the cam covers thats about it.
they cam out looking great.
I also have a bike shop local to me that told me he could powder coat all the parts for about $250 I think Im going to try that with my new LT5 and see how it comes out.
I was hoping I didn't have to pull the plenum I was going to try and tape it off with some think Plastic and use the Dremal on it. as for the Cam Covers I was going to see about using 0000 steel whool.. if I have to pull every thing I will but I was hoping to try and work around it.
If you get the dowrdy washers for the cam covers and the sealant before you start you can have it done in a weekend.
one day of work pulling sanding and painting the second day installing everything, also you bolts are corroded it wouldnt hurt to buy limeys kit with the hex head bolts they look great as well.
heres a link to my paint work some before and after shots I did all the work myself I also had to change my watter pump and while I was in there I fixed my oil leaks
