I honestly don't know what the extreme redline is for the stock LT5...also, what about some of those bigger cid motors. Anywhere close to 9k?

9K rpm? Not as far as I know. I am sure one of the more knowledgable guys will step up here but I think the cam chains/tensioners don't like to see too much more than around 7,500rpm for longevity reasons.

I *NEVER* :nono: run mine over 7-grand. But the other Z guys abuse em a lot though. I think it can take up to like 8000. The stock chip has the redline at 7200. The DRM chip has no Redline. I don't know how high it will rev up to with the DRM in though.

my rev limiter is set for 7,330. I believe you will have cam chain problems if you rev to much higher for any duration. Plus, I'm sure you will start popping accessories like the alternator, water pump ect..

stock redline is 7072 rpm... this is when the ignition gets interupted by the computerized rev limiter...

The modded LT5s have "some" lighter internal parts and can take a little more high rpm strain... they are designed to make more power at higher rpm... so... the self imposed redline is raised in the progamming of the chip... since many of the LT5 motors are a little bit different by design... the rpm limit may vary a little bit...
As far as how high the redline could be raised... hard to say... perhaps somebody else can answer that... I have not heard of a redline being higher than 7500 for a LT5... but that is for a street motor...

I have been curious as to what Fastlane Goldstiens motors turn... he has a spare 368 motor that puts out about 650 hp... that motor probably spins faster than his 431 motor... but... I am just guessing on that one...

The DRM chip I have runs to 7200-7300 then limiter.

After intake porting and headers, It runs to the limiter very fast. Before I almost never hit the limiter.

Before motor mods on the dyno it really rolled off after 6400rpm. After HP never stopped, 7200 still going up on the graph.

A 415 I recently bult would run to 8k before the rev limiter caught it. The rev limier was set to 7200. Let the bench racing begin!

The real question should be how many times will it rev to 8,000 rpm before a rev related problem occurs. I don't know, but its not unlimited for sure. Especially for the poor rod ratio's of the 415's and the problems associated with the timing chains. 368's probably will tolerate higher rpms better.
Heck, on my car it really doesn't matter, my peak power is at 6,800 rpms so there's really no reason to spin it any faster than 7,200. At least in the kind of racing I do.

I heard that to get your max 'power' mark, was to run the motor to the rev limiter mark it off on the rev counter then come back around a thousand revs and mark that off with a piece of tape and change gear at that tape mark.

Do any of you guys use this method.

Opinions are like @ssholes:):):

I *know* there are people who run the RPM's way up there. I remember talking with SW about his monster 415 and specifically asking where he shifted the car: 8200 was his response! He absolutely raped that car and it is still holding together fine. Another friend has a LPE 415 and the rev limiter is set around 7800RPM.

All that being said, everything I've read/talked to the experts about says that the cam chains were tested safely *to* 7400RPM. Anything after that and it's Russian Roulette. I don't think Aaron Scott will set a rev limiter over 7400 and he *strongly* advises against much over 7200(he has compromised and set it at 7300 for some people). My rev limter is set at 7200 and it's still at 379rwhp(max is 384@6000); it just doesn't fall off much and is tempting to raise the limit to 7400. I happen to like the engine in one piece though so I'll just keep hammering shifts at an indicated 7100 and hope for the best!:)

Hey, I got one of those.......errr, I mean I have both of those. :)

[QUOTE]Opinions are like @ssholes:):):

SW's 415 was up at LPE a lot too. How many times that motor came apart I don't know but I would bet that Paul Smith's version is not the original engine build. I never heard of it having a engine failure but I'm sure it's been freshened up more than once. Of course, this is pure speculation on my part.

I think for stroker motors LT5's have astounding rev limits. Usually, strokers don't even come close to 7,000 rpm. I think it is one of the best traits of this motor to have the torque at low rpm and the ability to rev relativly high to take advantage of the area under the curve. It makes stroker ZR1's faster than equally powered cars in most cases. My 2 cents, that and a quarter..........well you know.
:)
