Yes, they can be removed, but after all these years the paint underneath them would probably not match the rest of the car.

That's very true for the majority of cars that have seen a lot of sun, although your car seems to have benefited from careful ownership and being garaged full time. As a fellow "senior citizen" I can appreciate that. I've been watching this thread and it looks like you've got a great car for sale here; I'd be a possible buyer if I didn't already have too many cars. Maybe I'M the one who needs to start listing on BaT.
