I was reading some stuff on ls1tech and was just curious what your guy's thoughts were on the Casper voltage booster? Instead of a BAP (i am talking for cars under 700rwhp and have an upgraded fuel pump)
"Your alternator is designed to put out a specific voltage, generally 13.8 volts. The only problem is when there's a greater demand on the electrical system, such as a WOT blast, the alternator falls a little short. The V-Plus is designed to overcome voltage taper at WOT by stepping up the alternator voltage 2.2v. at 70% throttle. Result? More power to your fuel pump and ignition system. Unit plugs in, with no wires to cut or tap into. Includes hardware. " $70
I think the KB only goes up to 17v's anyhow, and from what i was reading, the walboro pump(s) are only rated up to 17v anyhow, so i guess in theory you are still leaving a little on the table, but for those of us under the 650-700 mark, i wonder if it makes that much of a difference?
I am thinking about trying this, but just curious if anyone out there has any strong reservations one way or the other.
I would have to wonder if it would have any effect on the other electronics in the car like the bulbs or computers?
I remember the old trick of pulling the pos batt cable off while the the engine was running with the lights on to check the alt often blew out every bulb that was on because the alt is capable of producing 120V.
I also considered this option, but a couple things bothered me...
It increases the voltage to everything, which means it takes more hp for the increased load on the alternator. I also worry about the ECU... very costly if it were to fry.
More importantly, in the event the alternator died at high RPM's and that are known to do that or the belt broke, there goes your fuel pressure. A BAP would still send the higher voltage to the FP (saving your engine from BOOM)... even if the battery was only at 10 volts. That's the real beauty of a regulated DC-DC converter as opposed to upping the field voltage on the alternator.
The volt booster will not work on a Corvette because our cars do not have a tps sensor to plug into. You would have to use a switch or something to activate it.
