Default BOV Question.........

I've got the stock ATI twin i/c kit with a "Blitz" BOV. The BOV works perfectly and has neven given me a problem......but under even the very slightest de-acceleration it's "hissing".

For instance when the car is set on cruise control at 70 and it starts slowing because of the down side of an overpass it starts hissing- and it's quite annoying. Driving around town doing 35-40 it'll do the same thing....and it sounds like s*&t IMO......not the cool "puff" sound when I hear at WOT when I get out of it....almost like a bad lifter or an exhaust leak.

Surely all BOV's don't make this annoying "ticking/hissing" sound under these slow/normal driving conditions. Anybody know what could be wrong? Can I adjust it? What other BOV's are you guys using- any feedback is appreciated.

I could swear I remember reading about this same problem a few days ago. I think Andy said something about this, but I could be wrong.

why dont you put the stock "MUFFLER" on it?

My set up has a 2 foot length of pipe and a small K&N filter on it.

I've got no idea what you're talking about or why it would help?

What he is saying is - off the BOV, do you have any hose or just a filter? I have just the filter on my BOV and it does hiss also, but only at higher r's, i dont hear it at cruise rpm (1-2k)

on the stock setup, there was a 2ft hose attached with the filter, i dont recall hearing much of it with that on.

You can always route a tube fromthe BOV to another location to cut down on the noise, like maybe the driverside brake duct????

I have a plastic BOV on mine and it makes the same noise. I want to change mine too, eventually, because it does sound like crap sometimes.

Mine also has a small breather on it......any one have any ideas?

I the Vortech Race BoV and don't get any hissing that I'm aware of.... Could it be the mounting location of yours? Mine is wayyyy down in the front on the bottom, maybe that's why I don't hear it???

Perhaps a change of location would help?

Mine is located as low as possible......It is on the outlet tube from the D1 located right next to the front sway bar. Still makes a fluttering noise when driving.

The problem is the fact that you are using a BOV (designed to amplify the sound (a la ricer)) as a bypass valve. Bypass and blowoff are similar, but the bypass is really designed for a turbo where you only have air released out of the valve just after high loads (the wastegate does the rest).

I've said this before, but nobody will listen. The stock ATI BOV is perfect and sounds great when setup correctly. It does leak a tiny bit of boost, but not enough where you would ever notice it. I'm sure the vortech race valve is also pretty good, but I'm not sure how well it flows.

A big valve (designed to move lots of air) with a big flange, or two valves is what is required to get a nice clean sound while not making boost.

I run the Vortech racing BOV. You are describing it pretty good right here.

Is the ATI BOV you're referring to the same one which Andy supplies with his basic kit? The basic BOV from Andy's kit appears to be a Bosch piece similar to the one used on some of the turbo Porsches.

No, that valve sounds pretty junky (IMHO). It works fine, but it flutters and does not flow real well. It is good enough, just does not sound great. It does seal well and I had slighly better low end boost response with it, but I really think my gas milage and drivability got better when I put on the better flowing valve and larger flange.

I had that valve on before and it made the car sound like it was sick at high rpm and low load. Like there was a wounded animal under the hood. Now I just hear rushing air under those same conditions. Like a jet sound, and a nice woooosh when coming off boost.

Thanks for the info Quick- I purchased my kit a long time ago and the Blitz BOV came with it- I had no idea it was "rice." Anyway, sounds like I need to purchase a Vortech Race Valve? Anyone have pics of this, or personal experience with it?
