Default ProCharger advertises...

... its superchargers as "gear driven, with no need to punch a hole in the oil pan."

Can someone please explain to this supercharging novice... which supercharger *DOES* require that you "punch a hole in the oil pan."

Thanks in advance for clearing up this mystery!

Vortech requires drilling the pan.

What they don't tell you is that the hour or so you save on drilling/tapping the oil pan is quickly lost when you have to do your first oil change, which generally has required removal of the head unit for the kits I've owned.

Never removed mine.
1) sucks most of the oil out from top using a big seringe w/ cath/hose attached to it
2) get under the car and drain the last few drop on rag as well as clean out debris attached to the drain plug.

The merits of self contained (internal lubrication) and engine oil based lubrication can be highly debated. The heat load of hot engine oil added to supercharger is negligible at best so this I don’t think accounts for much. It comes down to preference and I agree with above comments that drilling and tapping is a one time event that will pay dividends over time.

Vortech is also considerably quitter then ATI if that matters.

You read my mind... and my real concern. Every time I get some extra overtime or an unexpected bonus, I start looking at SC vs. H&C... but the "whine" issue always turns me off to the SC. If I ever decide to go SC, it will have to be with the quietest one available. With an A4 and an older engine, I am not so concerned about achieving absolute maximum horsepower. I am concerned about passing emissions, not making excessive noise and holding the engine together (all while still having some good fun)!

"Punching a hole in the oil pan" or not... I'm thinking the Vortech still makes the most sense.

You might REALLY want to research that before you pull the trigger on a Vortech. Not only should sound be a factor but "Reliability" should also be considered. Vortech has been plauged with belt/system problems on the C5. Most tuners will try and stay away from the kits.

I would rather have a loud car that I can drive every day, than a quiet car that I am afraid to go for a drive in.

I hear what you're saying... and all the superchargers seem to have their share of issues & problems... but noise is a real biggy with me. I've been a passenger in supercharged cars and the whine was not pleasant to my ears. Frankly, I'd probably be happier with a H&C job... if only I could find a local shop that I could trust. Some of the reports about noisy ProChargers make my skin crawl. Again, I have the advantage that I am not looking to test the limits of my car or set any new track records. Rather, I'm just looking for a bit more seat of the pants power than what I've got right now.

To me it sounds like a H/C setup is the way to go.

Turbos are the best solution for a quiet car that is also fast.

Probably right... but I still have to find someone to do the work. Not easy up here in Taxachusetts these days (unless you happen to own a Mustang). Bottom line is that if I have to take the car to New Jersey (ECS) to get anything done... you can damn well bet it is going to be a supercharger!!!

Yikes!!! WAY too expensive for my wallet... and inappropriate for a '98 (IMHO).

I'll agree that turbos aren't inexpensive. What is wrong with a TT 98 ?

Actually, that is a very good point. I discussed some possible mods with him two summers ago, but it never went anywhere. As I recall, we were talking about a "cam & LS1 edit only" job back then when money was tight and I decided that I would save up and do it right or not do anything at all. I just did a quick search and I see he is now running a Z06 with a ProCharger... very I'll have to reconnect and see what he can do for me now! Meanwhile, I just got an SC install price from another organization not that far from home (although still not a Vette specialty outfit). God bless GOOGLE!!!

Geeeeesus Gawd Almighty!!! Now that is what I call power!!! That would leave my A4 transmission in pieces all over the highway!

Now I am embarrassed by my modest goals.

Didn't SlowHawk post yesterday that he runs 12-14 pounds of boost?
