It seems with everyone changing pulley sizes that belt slipage
is becoming a common problem. Has anyone ever tried any of
the numerous belt dressings ? I was in my local auto parts store
and noticed a can of CRC belt dressing that sez it can be used
on both V & serpentine type belts.
I adjusted my belt but it still squeeled at about 5700 rpm. So rather than tightening more, I bought CRC's can and sprayed it on both sides of the belt. The noise went away and I thought everything was fine all evening long. I got up the next morning and started the motor and a loud squeel that sounded like a bearing going bad came from about the vicinity of the water pump. As the engine warmed up, the noise went away. I thought everything was okay. But evertime I started the engine cold, it would screetch and then fade. Belt dressing doesn't stop belt slippage, it just makes the noise go away. It can be easily overapplied as the label says just put a little on. Well, what's a little mean? One second or two? Or three? Six? I finally had to replace the belt to get it to quit screeching.
