Default 383 stroker with maggie

My son's car is an 01 C5 6 speed with maggie (IC and meth)

Made 435 rwhp at 7 psi, but after 6 months, ring lands are broken on 3 pistons.

I want to rebuild this and try for mid 500 rwhp. (Closer to 600, but if NOS is needed then so be it)

Is it worth going with one of the econo 383 kits?

I am looking at rods and pistons anyhow.

Anyone have good reults with the Eagle or Scat stuff?

How about rod length piston height and cam recommendations...

TIA

Have reputable builder, hand build you a blower motor. Since, you are on the Right Coast, I would highly recommend ECS or Cartek. They will do all the proper tweaks.

Eagle is just fine.

382 all stroke with a Mag, Cartek got 567/567 to ground. Torque as flat as an EKG chart.

Set aside funds for a better fuel system as well.

Thanks for the reply. I've looked at offerings from both, but this will have to be a DIY job.

What boost are you running? CR? Any meth or other stuff?

What did you do for fuel?

I'm in Miami and until I get this one done, my son is in the loaner (My 03 Z06)

So you see the urgency...

I use Progressive engines in Miami for honing, balancing, etc. They are a full race shop and know all the tricks. I have ALL the measuring tools, etc. left over from when I built race engines in the 70's.

I'm just not up to snuff on the LS stuff (yet)

Have a set of Dart 225's coming

Darn, I'm curious how three ring lands got broken at that boost and HP level. Esp. with the meth on it.... Mine's running at 5#'s boost and about 400HP. Can't imagine my engine taking a dump with those numbers

Some would say heat and/or detonation.

I don't drive this one, so I don't know (yet). There are no signs of detonation or anything else.

Piston tops, combustion chambers and plugs all look just fine.

I've been researching and it seems that this is pretty common and many have even put many more miles on motor before finding out.

In some cases the bore gets damaged, but probably not in this case (Need more inspection)

What type of fuel were you running and who tuned it?

Hmmm...

I've been searching on some other forums...seems like some have had trouble with the Eagle cranks. Anyone know if this has been resolved?

Pistons are starting to look like Diamond or JE

Compstar rods are at the top of the short list (at the moment). I am not 100% comfortable with offset rods.

So what clued you into the fact that the ringlands were gone and how did you verify it?

Just making sure you are not fixing something that is not broke.

Smoke pumping out of oil cap. Not constant, but steady puffs.Did a compression test and had 60 psi on 5 and 7, 90 on #6.Leakdown on #5 was 30%, so I decided to haul it out (the top). Took out # 7 piston and about 2" of ring land fell out. #5 had 3 pieces fall out. No broken rings, just lands.

I think that it was broke...

Outside of the smoke, the car ran fine. It revved to redline with no noise and still pulled hard (Well as hard as 435 rwhp with broken lands can pull )

I bought the car 36k on it. Probably hard miles from what I can tell, but the price was right and it has ALL the nice creature comforts.

A nice 600+ rwhp forged engine is what this baby needs, but on a DIY budget.

I had no time to play with it, so a local tuner installed the Maggie, another shop installed the clutch, and on and on.When the engine began to smoke, I decided that I needed to get involved and I am glad that I did.

Outside of the engine problems, here is what I am dealing with.

The front crossmember was loose on one side as well as some other fasteners.

The crank pulley wobbles (removed and pinned by someone during the maggie install)

The flywheel was never re-surfaced. I paid for that during the clutch install. Also, 1 of the clutch bolts was not OEM.

The front leaf is de-laminating, causing the front end to sag.

It goes on and on...

Here is the short list of repairs that I am doing...

Replacing all 4 wheel bearing\hub assemblies.
Slotted/drilled zinc rotors all around with Hawk pads.
Complete Z06 suspension..springs, sways and 06 shocks from Fred Beans

Tranny repair with all the stuff from RPM

And of course the engine and fueling, etc.

I don't want to know what all this would cost if I took it to someone GOOD, so I'll just have to bite the bullet and do it myself. Actually, my son and his friends have done most of the work so far. I've been playing shop foreman...

Anyone willing to share some knowledge or thoughts?

Please do...

Have you checked out http://www.thunderracing.com/ thay have a good price on the eagle crank.

I would use it and some diamond or JE pistons on a low budget build.

Thanks

Been there and it looks good.

I don't know if it's a typo, but they seem to have a very good price on the Callies as well.

I'll call and find out whether there are any major issues with the Eagle.

Also whether they can be used with 6.125 rods.

I'm looking at rotating weight, pistons and con rods. Anyone use the Compstar rods? Scat or Eagle?

Any specs on weight? quality?

I read that the Compstars are true on center rods while the other 2 are SBC and have an offset.

I am a little concerned about the distance from the top of the piston to the top ring. I believe the Diamond's are at .210 and .240 for off the shelf pieces. (p/n 11504 and 11503) Not sure about the JE's

In my case, more is better.

I think that everyone makes true on center rods these days. 6.125 is the length you want. A lot of people use Eagle and Lunati. You really need to call Thunder/ls1 speed or some other shop that sells a lot of ls1 engine parts. Just make sure you get pistons that are spec for the 4.0 crank and think about your static compression target.

RJW, do you happen to know if that motor had the scavenger ring added per TSB by dealer to fix oil consumption? Just curious as an 01 if maybe it was 'fixed' but caused the bigger problem by doing so...
