Default Starter Question????

I got my car out of the shop last weekend, the very same day the starter went out, I replaced the starter (the 2nd one) since I put the long tube headers on the car( cartek 1 7/8s ) last night I was just cruising down the street and the car started making a weird noise like if the bottom end of the car was torn apart it sounded as if it was coming from under the shifter, I went back today where I had to leave the car and it started fine and the noise was gone, one of my buddys told me that if the starter got hot then it probably got stuck on the fly wheel, I just wanted to know if this is possible and if I buy one of those heat shields for the starter if that will prevent this from happening. Also would it be a good idea to wrap a heat shield around the headers.
Ps ..whenever I was trying to start the car last night it wouldn't do it but it was trying to turn but it sounded like something was stuck between the fly wheel and the starter

If the starter gear stayed engaged with the flywheel you would know , i had it happen to me in my 67 camaro , my poor starter hit about 20,000rpm in 1st gear before it gernaded. let me tell you it screamed for about 5 seconds and before i could get it out of gear KABOOM luckily i was leaving pep boys so i wasnt down too long.
