Aluminum is not necessary with NOS. There's nothing different about running a nitrous application as far as intake manifolds are concerned. I believe the best mass market (versus sheet metal) manifold right now is the FAST. It makes the most horsepower N/A so it will also be best when you spray. The FAST also has provisions for the direct port fogger nozzles if you want to go that route.

Don't really know. Just taking a guess at why someone might recommend an aluminum intake.
if i ever upgraded and stayed nitrous i would grab the fast unit. allows for directports very easily and comes 90/90 and performs fairly good. there is a local guy here who had a backfire and went with the lpe aluminium piece but im not a big fan of heatsoak/performance loss if there are other options that get the job done just the same or better.

True. If the plates are open, it might just blow the filter off the end of the AB...
Are these N2O backfires common or is this just something people need to be aware of when running really big shots through a single nozzle?

the aluminium could be stronger but ive seen guys blow stock metal intake manifolds apart on different cars. you dont randomly backfire if it happens you should look for a reason and correct the problem.
I would not worry about getting an aluminum manifold because you are afraid of a backfire. If you have all the right safety features a backfire is almost unheard of.
A backfire can bend the heck out of the throttle plate in the throttle body.
