Default Melling oil pump for FI

Anyone running a Melling oil pump? How is it working out for you?

Do you need to do anything special to install it, or does it just bolt right up?

What's your oil pressure like, OEM pump vs. the Melling pump?

Thanks for the input. Just ordered mine from Thunder.

I know you can get away with a factory pump but given that most of the turbo setups I've seen heat the oil more than the SC setups, $150 was cheap insurance to make sure I didn't have a pressure problem later on.

The added heat in the oil really does cause a noticable pressure drop, and then you have to get into using thicker oils, better filters, etc. etc. etc.

I have a melling Race pump. It came with 2 spring rates. Because I have extra clearances in a forged engine as well as an OIL Cooler, we thought it would be best to use the higher spring rate. The results are fantastic

With my stock pump which was also shimmed, I had some real oil pressure issues when I was on the track. Even on the highway in the hot summer months when the oil temps got up to 225 I saw the oil pressure drop down to 18-20 psi at idle, 30 psi at 2500 RPM. Not really a bad deal on the street (well within factory parameters in fact) but the track was downright scary. There were sessions when I would get off and the oil pressure in the pits at idle was in single digits And thats with the heavier 15/50 oil! I was taking risks for 2 years which was when I went to the LPE STAGE II+ and the forged engine. AS MENTIONED, It was the looser clearances in the forged engine that did it. I droPped 15 PSI after the mod, even with a shimmed pump.

But the melling pump got her way up there. I think I am now in the 50's at 2500 rpm and idling in the very low 40's at a 215 oil temp. My next track event is in October so I will be able to see what she does on the track BUT I dont think I will be seing single digit OIL Pressure #'s at idle ever again. The track will also give me a better gage of what the LPE OIL cooler does also. I had them both installed at the same time by 21CMC when I was in Dallas. With the LPE TT package, it was a lot of labor! But Right now its safe to say that there is a dif between the higher volume Melling pump and a shimmed stock pump!!!

I run the 10296's in everything I build. If your running a double chain you will need to clearance the back of the pump to clear the chain and machine the front cover to clear the pump as it will hit it.

I vividly remember George, one of the support engineers at Melling, telling me about that. Good info
