The surface is supposed to be rough to grip the head gasket. Different gaskets require different block and head finishes. Consult the head gasket manufacturer. I would jsut clean up the surface with a plastic scraper and solvent and assemble with new gaskets. Is this a built motor? Are you building it? For 20+ psi, the heads and block need to be surfaced.

The block is a built bottom end.. but I lifted the heads on the dyno when I was trying to push it to 30#.
So... when we removed the heads (heads are okay)... we broke 2 retainers, and lifter. ... I am going to o-ring the heads. but my machine shop is telling me that I have to deck the block to get that 'roughness' out of the block to get a good seal.
