Do nitrous solenoids have a high hold current that would cause them to burn up or live a real short life if they are energized for extended periods of time (e.g., an hour or more?)
Yep, when you leave a noid on for extended peroids of time it can/will cause failure, coil is likely fried.

It's not fried yet because I haven't wired it up I'm going to use one to control boost signals and was just trying to determine the best way to wire it up. Now that I know a simple on/off switch is bad, I'll just open/close the solenoid as appropriate using Hobbs switches.
