Default Belts....

After tracing the chirping sound coming from the engine compartment to my belt , I have decided to change the same. The belt that came with my Paxton kit has the following numbers on it : 060895. There is nothing wrong with the belt it just chirps. God Knows why.

Chriswtx recommeded going with a Gates K060900. Before going ahead and buying the same any other suggestions/opinions ?

P.S. On a side note , what is the max safe boost for a Stock Longblock LS1 ?

I used Gates belts for a number of years and thought they were allright but when I switched to the Goodyear PolyV gatorback belt it was night and day... less noise, less slip and lest belt dust... in fact I went through a handful of Gates and have had the same Gatorback for a couple of years now...

so decipher the belt.....06 just means 6 rib
the rest is the length of the belt 89.5"

Now look at your tensioner... is it up high or bottomed out... in other words can you use a slightly smaller belt... if so look for an 89" rather than the 90"

the Goodyear belt number is likely K060895 to replace what you got... don't go longer as you will be into your tensioner more... use the smallest belt that will slip over the pulleys then let the tensioner do it's thing...

Hey V8,
You want to make sure that the belt is not frayed in the back or front. It is possible for a pulley to be slightly off and couse the chirping noise but not throw a belt. I do not recomend going to a larger belt at all. If anything go with the next smaller size if it fits, but not larger.
If you do not see any fraying try taking a rag with a little WD40 on it, while it's chirping just touch the front edge of the belt, if it stops then you know there is a pulley (most likely H/U) that is aligned to far to the rear of the car. Or visa versa. Sometimes this will occur from variences in water pump gasket thickness and so on. From there the fix would be to increase or decrease the shim thickness behind the H/U pulley.

Hope that helps,

Hey Doug,

The belt is as new. The workshop I took it too made sure all pulleys were aligned. We rubbed some WD40 on it and the sound seems to have gone. I just got the car back and don't hear it anymore.

Just in case I still want to get an extra belt. Is the size above correct ? I.e. 060895 ?

Without alky and with the temp in your country I wouldn't push it too far. You'll end up needing a shortblock and a trans.

Unless thats what you ultimately want!
