Default Boost Question

I have a 98 A4 with Andy's PS1 charger setup. It is running 6 lbs of boost with the 4.10 pulley. I just installed a new 3.6 pulley over the weekend, but I am only seeing 7 lbs of boost????????

Any ideas as to what could be happening to the pressure. I was expecting to get close to 10 or 11 lbs of boost.

TIA
Dave

You should get more than a 1 lb increase. I would check for the belt slipping and loose conections on the plumbing.

I agree with your expectations of 10+ lbs. I was there breifly that is why I now have a forged engine. However in answer to your question, I agree with Mike04.

Default Belt is tight

I put on a new Gates, 6 rib belt. It is very tight. In fact, it was a b***h to put on. It is at the tuner this week for a new high pressure oil pump, and a retune. The last tune with 6 lbs only gave me 440 RWHP. The engine is forged, so I am not worried about too much boost, just curious as to where the heck it is going.

When you say tight-was tight to the point that you had to remove the alternater pulley and loosen the alternater bolts so alternater moved inward? the only way to fit a tight belt is this way-oh and the blower bracket has to be loose as well.

Absolutely, the alternator was pushed all the way forward and the SC brackets were loosened up so that I could get some lean out of that assembly. We just barely got the belt over the alternator with a screwdriver, and then when we tightened up the SC bracket and the alternator, all of the give came out of the belt. That sucker doesn't move.

I hooked up all the plumbing according to Andy's instructions. Hopefully, there is just something loose somewhere.

Did you remember to put the vacuum line back on the BOV? Re-check all the rubber connecters for any cuts or nicks or any loose fittings or clamps.

If your belt is slipping you will get black dust deposited near the belt. Look for dust deposits on the the coolant tank right across from where the SC pulley is.

Default Belt is fine

What I'm thinking is that the BOV that Andy supplies with his kits may have been limited to 7 lbs. The car used to go fairly uick to 5 lbs and then end up at 6 lbs at WOT. Now when you hit the throttle, the boost jumps to 7 lbs and then stays right there. I guess I need to call Andy and check.

is the line going to the boost gauge kinked? maybe it is only allowing x amount of air through (recently had this problem but on the vaccum side, line was kinked and only showing 10hg of vaccum)

I believe Quick tested running no BOV before (or wide open), and he only lost 1lb overall with the BOV wide open the whole time - and the BOV wouldnt restrict your boost (that is what a wastegate is for).

I had a problem with the Vortech valve that came with my A&A kit. Here are the pictures. The O ring came unseated and I was loosing a little boost. Your O ring might be stopping the valve from closing al the way. I reseated mine and have no problems now. The O ring goes in the groove in the last pic.
