Recently on a call to my turbo builder we had a discussion of what kills turbo's.
The biggest issue is having some sort of oil contamination. What this means you guys racing and lift a head, blow a gasket, spin a bearing, take out the thrust, hurt the engine, etc.. and have metal go though the oil.. what happens is this metal sticks to the shaft on the turbo.. throwing it out of balance.. 4 months latter your cruising around.. it starts blowing oil out.. and you start wondering "What happened yesterday".. when the damage started 4 months earlier. Now you need new wheels, cartridge, bearings, etc.
This post may save you money.. If you hurt your engine.. send the turbo back for an inspection/cleaning. Caught early.. its a cheap deal in the scheme of things.
Wait.. the bill will come.
Hope this helps.. been through my share of turbo's.. Always blamed something the day before.. when in fact it was months before.
Again, this is why I like to sell customers Turbonetics turbochargers... They come with a one year warranty PERIOD. Doesn't matter if its a ball bearing unit or a non ball bearing unit... or the users fault.
Another thing that kills turbochargers (since were on the subject) is the oil drain and blow by. If your turbocharger can not drain correctly, it's doing nothing but contaminating itself because it can not drain. The oil will cake the bearing case and cause the seals to blow out. Blow by is an issue because your pressurizing the crank case which also doesn't allow for proper drain.

Just my .02 cents!

Are you sure its an unconditional warranty?
I mean if someone welds a header.. a piece of slag goes through and kills the exhuast wheel.. They cover that? Or someone starves the turbo for oil? Or as you say not provide proper drain.. If so.. sign me up..
yes, it's unconditional, even if you throw a wrench in the impeller and starve the turbo with oil. no questions asked, one year free replacement.
Thats EXACTLY what I tell customers ... I've seen them fix turbochargers more then once with in a year as well... Even swap out exhaust housings.. They are a very good company and thats why we've used them for over 15 years.
