I have a 02 z with a P-1sc, 39# injectors, kooks headers, x pipe....I do get what i think is detonation once in a while, I'm not sure if its just bad gas or i'm running out of fuel? and the check engine light came on tonight. I'll get it scaned this week to see what code it is, Any ideas?
I dont have a fuel pressure gauge in it (yet). I only own the car about 3 months and with all the bad weather here in NY i only just started to drive the car now, I filled up at gulf 92 octane. The previous owner had the car tuned by the vette doctors out on long island. As soon as i get some spare time i'm going to make an appointment with them again for a dyno tune. In the interm i may just go put in a can of 104+ and see if it helps. Also i'll have to see what code set off the light.
Stock motor? You really, really do not want to be running the car in boost if you think it's leaning out or detonating. First step would definitely be a fuel pressure gauge or dyno time with a wideband.

The first thing you need to do is check out what codes your car is creating, and why.
The 39 pound injectors are barely adequate for your combination, with headers and the x pipe. A tune will probably show them to being close to being maxed out. Do you have an aftermarket fuel pump installed? The Racetronix pump would be a good one to go with, if you still have the factory one. You do need to find to what is going on before you end up needing an engine rebuild. Bob
OK i got to the shop this afternoon, The code was for coolant thermostat... i cleared it and it stayed off. I got on the car with the traction off and it seems fine. NO detonation, Now that im thinking about it can it be the traction control making the car do what i described in the first post? Either way i'll be ordering a set of motron 60's and a new pump. just to be safe.
OK i just ordered the 60's ill just wait to get it tuned with the new fuel system.
You need to get yourself a scanner or a tuner so you can datalog some of this stuff on your own. There is a big difference between a dyno run and actually running on the street. I would not trust my ears as a detonation dector.
Yes, Traction Control can make your engine ping. The TCS work by pulling timing or/and fuel, but not necessarily both. If it pulls fuel and your under boost, you'll go dangerously lean. It happened to me and then I bought a small electronic box from Ecklers (page 89 LapTrax TracActive Controller) that will make "TCS off" the default setting so you never have to turn it off. Competitive mode becomes default.
