Default changing C5 fuel pump

How do you get to the fuel pump on a C5? I'm thinking about upgrading to an aftermarket one like a Racetronix.

Get your fuel level down as low as possible.

Remove driver rear wheel.

Remove plastic wheel well cover (fwd part of wheel well small panel).

Remove small metal cover (fwd wheel well) to expose fuel sending unit.

Go back up to fuse panel, passenger side front fender, make a jumper with a piece of wire.

Now go back and remove center fuel line (if I remember correctly) from fuel sending unit and hook a piece of plastic tubing up to it, run the tubing down to a gas can.

Go back up and pull the fuel pump fuse/solenoid, insert jumper, turn key on and the pump will pump out the remaining fuel out of your tank into the gas can you hooked up. Run it until you get air bubbles..turn key off and pull the jumper out, reinsert fuel fuse. The tank will now be empty for the most part..with a little residual left.

Disconnect remaining fuel lines.

Undo bolts that hold sending unit in place.

Now begin pulling the pump out, you will have to rotate it a little until you find the spot where it comes out easiest.

When you get 1/2 way or 1/3 of the way locate the arm that is connected to a little electric looking scale. This is the arm that connects to the float and is responsible for moving the dial that tells you what your fuel level is.

There is a little black clip, carefully pull the clip out with some needle nose pliers...make SURE THAT IT IS OUT FAR ENOUGH THAT IT WILL NOT FALL BACK INTO THE TANK.

After you get the clip out...simply pull the arm out of the fuel sender to a point where it clears the unit.

Now rotate the float and wiggle it out gently from the tank. After you get the arm out...you can pull the fuel pump out.

Reverse process to put back in.

lingenfelter has a great write up on this, supply line has the black tape; unplug the scavenge pump(if aps tt), you don't want this running if you jump the fuel pump relay

The last time I swapped my fuel pump it took exactly 1 hour from the time I lifted the car to the time I set it down...that was with only doing it one time before. It is really easy to do.

Just replaced one in an F body...it's called the hatch mod. Once the hatch mod is complete you can remove and replace a fuel pump in 20-30 mins.

I was a paragraph behind and broke the fuel sending unit wire. Use the paper clip that comes with the pump
